Includes the surveyors' route which began on 1st. June, ca. 1848, from a site along the Manawatu River to the Ruamahanga River, Lake Wairarapa, ending at the Hutt River on 20 June. Description: Survey plan of the Ihuraua Block, approximately 12,000 acres, bounded by the Iparaonei Native land in the north, government land in the northeast, Pari-atua range in the west and the Tutumae and Managaroa Rivers in the south. Contains 38 Maori names are over circa 4.6 miles of the Ihuraua River, including the names of several pa sites (and excluding the names of streams); identifies the Te Angi fern bush and the fern range (Taihowhiti) on the map. Karamana's Reserve (21Ac) and the Horopapera Reserve are located in the northeastern edge of the map on government land. Written on map: AAFV 997 W24. See Info map 260, T25, 1978. Description: Topographic map of the area from Lake Wairarapa to Matarawa to the Pairoa Range and the Aorangi Mountains. A note on the map states that it is a tracing from a ca. 1855 sketch map held at the Turnbull Library, by A.G. Bagnall, ca. 1966, showing land blocks and runholders names, Maori land, and various Maori names for natural features. McNaughten's property, of 2000 acres, is situated between the Mangauru and Waihora Rivers, adjacent to the proposed road to the beach. The road from Wellington is marked and the line of a proposed road to the beach. Oteraia [i.e Otaraia] Pa, Burlings Hotel and Nix's Hotel are marked. Names include Borlese, Morrison, Butler, Tucker, Brierly, Smith & Revens, Gillies, W.H. Smith, McNaughten, Bidwill. Scale of original [ca.1:126 720] A.G. Bagnall was the Chief Librarian of the Alexander Turnbull Library, and also wrote a comprehensive history of the Wairarapa entitled `Wairarapa - an historical excursion' (1976), but this map does not appear in the book Quantity: 1 map(s).
