Description: Comprises 11 letters from Charles H Turner and Frank C Turner to their mother in England while they were sailing to New Zealand, travelling round New Zealand followed by a visit to Australia. Three of the letters are from Charles and eight are from Frank. They were written on board ship, the `Kent' and the `Tarama', and while they were travelling in New Zealand and Australia. Both sons describe life on board ship, the people they were travelling with, ports visited, activities on board ship and describe in some detail the various places they visited in New Zealand (Papakura, where their brother had a farm, Waikato, Lyttelton, Wellington, Bluff, Dunedin, Nelson, Auckland and Taranaki) and Australia (Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart Town). Description: First 6 volumes concerned mainly with life at sea, but include a period of 9 months in New Plymouth 1841-1844 (Vol 3). The daily round in Lyttelton, Christchurch and Wellington, in the later volumes. Vol 11 is a journal of a period in Burma in 1848. Vol 12 consists of miscellaneous papers, logs etc, including a genealogical table (presented 1967, by O E Smuts-Kennedy, Wellington) of the Wright, Evelyn and Liardet families. Source of title - Supplied Sydney Wright travelled to New Zealand with his younger brother John (Jack) in 1842 on the `Blenheim'. They lived in New Plymouth until 1844 when they returned to England. Sydney married Georgina Amelia Pickford in 1857 and they returned to New Zealand on the `Cresswell' in 1858 Quantity: 16 volume(s). 0.24 Linear Metres. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s (some dated 1868), and about 1870. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from comparison with handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p 51) Early photographs of Wellington show a view down Boulcott Street, a view probably from Boulcott Street looking down over `Rhodes Bay' (now the reclaimed area beyond Willis Street), and looking towards the city from Thorndon. One view in the North Island shows the Kinross residence in Napier. Most of the photographs are of central North Island, with particular emphasis on the volcanic areas around Lake Taupo, Lake Rotomahana, the Waikato River (including the Huka Falls and Aniwhaniwha Falls), Tokaanu, Ohinemutu and the Pink Terraces. Several scenes show military outposts and redoubts, including two of Captain Gilbert Mair "and his men" (the Arawa Flying Column), at Kaiteriria Pa, Rotokakahi "just arrived after a raid after Te Kooti"; and one of the interior of the pa "with Captain Mair's contingent". In the South Island scenes include Lyttelton, Akaroa Harbour, the Otira River and Gorge, Bealey River, the summit of Arthurs Pass, the Porters Pass Hotel, Taramakau River, Gibson's Quay at Hokitika, one of several small churches at Hokitika, and Hereford Street (Christchurch). New Zealand views include Auckland, Tikitapu Bush, Waitakere Creek, Pink & white Terraces, Atiamuri, Ohinemutu, Wairakei, Napier, Wellington, Upper Hutt, McNab's Gardens (Lower Hutt), the Teremakau river and cable car, Nelson, Westland, Otira Gorge, Taipo, the Waimakariri River, Christchurch, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, Dunedin and Invercargill. Pacific views include Rarotonga, Samoa, Fiji (including Suva), New Caledonia, Tahiti and Hawaii. Photographers represented include George Valentine, James Connolly, Wheeler & Son, J R Morris, and Hart, Campbell & Co. Includes of gold mining and sluicing in Westland, HM ships Ringarooma and Hyacinth, and games of croquet and polo in Hawaii. HMS Hyacinth, a 3rd class cruiser commissioned in 1886, cruised in the Pacific under the command of Captain Edmund G Bourke RN.
