Description: Comprises four histories submitted by A W Glassford in support of the New Zealand Century Farm and Station Award application. They cover the pre European and early settler use of the Matakanui Station area, the histories of Matakanui Station, Otago, the Glassford family, Dougalston farm situated on the former township of Drybread, and the Rankeillor farm property. Original owners Henry (Harry) Gordon-Glassford (1764-1819) and his halfbrother James Glassford Gordon-Glassford (1771-1834) emigrated from Scotland to Australia and New Zealand purchasing 80,000 acres in the Lauder Survey District, 12 Km from Omakau, Central Otago. In 1864 the brothers took over the lease of Run 223 from Messrs Webster and Thomson. The run ran from the top of the Dunstan Range to the Manuherikia River, Lauder Creek and Chatto Creek. They operated under the name Glassford Bros. and the run became known as Matakanui Station. Description: Indenture for sale of part of Kapiti Island, 12 Jan 1840; a sale by the chief `E Rangi Hero' [Rangihiroa] to Alexander Fraser, Thomas Fraser and Robert Jillett for 'one cask of best tobacco, and one hogshead of rum with one pair of good blankets'. The land is described as a 'piece or parcel of land called Wiorua situated at or near the north end of the island of Kapiti Cooks Straits New Zealand at present occupied by the said Alexander Fraser a fishery and bounded on the east side by the sea on the north side by the land belonging to E Kai [?] Hai a chief of the Nati inu tui tribe on the west and south by land in the possession of the said E Rangi Hero containing one acre be the same a little more or less'. Quentin Hooper Smith - Te Pa (Waitahora)

Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Quentin Hooper Smith accompanied by supporting land documents; history of land ownership, recipe for Emma Hooper Smith's Christmas cake; photographs of farm and family Te Pa comprises 2 sections, one that formed part of the Education Reserve and the other balloted in 1902. Samuel Hooper Smith bought the latter in 1903, at which time it was named Loch Catherine. He renamed the farm Hyndhope and went into partnership with Mrs Ida Lane of Chesterhope in 1907. The 1200 acre Education reserve section (Te Pa) was managed by Samuel for William Nelson from 1901 to 1903 (until he bought Hyndhope). The name Te Pa had by this time come to denote the amalgamated properties. In 1907 Samuel and Mrs Lane bought `Te Pa' for £3000. The partnership lasted until 1924 when Samuel took it over. His son Eion took over the property after WWII, later passing to his son Quentin.
