Description: Photographs mostly taken in the area of Mount Tarawera after the 1886 eruption, showing the extreme changes to the landscape. Chiefly taken by Charles Spencer and J C Blythe, members of the survey party led by Stephenson Percy Smith. Some are taken by photographer Josaiah Martin [possibly not a member of the survey team]. Description: A pre-eruption view of Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake) shows the Maori village of Kaiteriria. In the left foreground a group of Maori is seated on the ground beside a raised storehouse (pataka), with several other pataka and whare further away. There is a stake fence between the pataka and the whare, as well as another pataka on the headland reaching away into the lake. Three figures sit in a waka with a small rectangular sail at lower right. The island or headland at the far right has a flat top which may be a pa site. There are bare steep hills on the far side of the lake. Inscriptions: Backing board recto - top centre - [Title]; Recto - bottom left - C Blomfield. 1882 Quantity: 1 oil(s).
