Description: View of a man (thought to be Reverend Joseph Matthews) standing near gravestones in the churchyard of the 1st Saviours Church in Kaitaia, Northland, with the wooden church building in the background, buttressed by props. Photograph taken between 1875 and 1888 by an unidentified photographer. Source of descriptive information - From back of file print: In a heavy gale in 1875 the timbers of the church cracked, giving rise to the fear that the church would collapse. As a consequence 2 props were placed on either side of the exterior walls. These seem to be visible in the photo. Man thought to be Rev. Joseph Matthews (1808-1895). (Information from "Matthews of Kaitaia" by S C & L J Matthews, Reed: 1940). Date of photograph estimated by cataloguer. Source of descriptive information - Library client identified the radio station as being at Awanui, not Kaitaia. He also gave the opening and closing dates, and the name of the road that it was on as well as other historical information relating to the station. Information recieved January 2011. Opened 18 December 1913 and closed 10 February 1930. In 1927 was redesignated Z.L.A. Awanui. New Zealand's first high power spark transmitter radio telegraph station for ship to shore communication making use of morse code. Archeological detail of old water course or drain, remains of Maori kainga encircling drain, remains of Maori camp, several large store pits, and streams (Waitapu, Kohi, Whau, Waipapa).
