Description: Photographs, mostly of the South Island, from the collection of the Beckett family. Most were taken by Ethel Mary Beckett, with some being the work of Amy Middleton Beckett. The work of Wheeler & Son, of Christchurch, and Albert E Winzenberg of Masterton is also represented. A photograph of Palmerston Atoll, in the Cook Islands, is included in the collection. Description: Shows at lower right a covered wagon stopped beside a wooden hut. Two men, three horses and a dog are standing beside the wagon, which is standing at the side of a road, curving away around the corner of a road that follows a river though mountainous country. There are snow-capped peaks in the distance. Several birds flutter around the hut, and there are stands of native bush at left and right. Description: Shows Mount Ruapehu in the left distance. Two horses graze in the right foreground, near a cabbage tree, and two figures stand together a little further off, towards a homestead and outbuildings in the middle distance. There is a group of cattle in the left middle distance. The other works in the group include one dated 1892 and one dated 1893, and it is assumed that all date from the late 1880s and early 1890s. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - T.G. [and title]; Verso - centre - Ruapehu / about 50 miles from Oeo Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Ink and wash, on sheet 137 x 224 mm. Provenance: Previously sold at Christie's South Kensington, 25 May 1989, lot no. 176. Description: Shows a cleared area in a hollow, with a large fallen tree trunk in the left foreground. A man is seated in the centre foreground on a smaller trunk, near his saddled horse. A fence stretches across the foreground, and beyound the white wooden gate, a man drives two cows away through the cleared area, beyond which there is bush-covered rolling plain leading to Mt Taranaki in the distance. On the left two small huts stand among bare trees. There is a tree fern near the huts. Inscriptions: Recto - centre right - (On the slope of a small mound): T.G. / 1893 Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows a scene of the South Canterbury plains, near Peel Forest, with a snow-covered Mount Peel in the distance. A stream winds its way into the foreground. A farmer, walking his horse and with his dog wide to the right of him, musters a herd of cattle; there would also appear to be sheep in the distance. A farmhouse with its chimney smoking stands to the left of the scene, nestled in trees and bush. A similar view of Mount Peel painted at around the same time (watercolour, titled Mt Peel, South Canterbury. A-182-083). The view is of a greater distance away, with no discernible foreground and with rain falling on the mountains. Description: Shows a view of Mount Aspiring, with four people and two horses in the foreground, high atop a ridge facing the mountain. Three of the people stand close to the edge of the ridge, with one gesturing towards the mount; one figure, possibly Maori, bends slightly to look over the edge into the mist below. The fourth figure sits away from the others, tending the horses.
