Description: Three drawings of soldiers near Te Awamutu. Two are pencil, ink and watercolour, with one soldier standing, one on horseback. The upper view has a military camp in the background and shows the men in profile; the central view shows the men on guard, seen from behind, watching over a valley. The lowest view, in pencil, is a landscape with soldiers passing along a path away from the artist. Description: View looking north up the beach towards Mount Taranaki and the cliffs of South Taranaki, with foot soldiers marching and cavalry ahead and to the right. The watercolour is a copy of a watercolour by Colonel Edward Arthur Williams held by the Hocken Library and entitled A stroll on the beach - Mt Egmont in the distance, 16 February 65. Description: View on the southern flank of Maungatautari with soldiers among the long grass, firing towards the pa on the top of the nearby ridge. Two horses are galloping by and there is swampy land or a stream in the foreground. Gunsmoke from hidden Maori can be seen coming from the pa and from the foot of the hill. This was the final battle of the Waikato campaign of the New Zealand wars While many of Hamley's watercolours are copied from those of his superior officer, E. A. Williams, this work may be his own The additional title 'Maori Pah on hill' is in the hand of Anthony Murray-Oliver, a former staff member. Description: Scene inside a pa, with soldiers on guard and seated on the ground, a white horse pulling a cart to the left. The watercolour is a likely to be a copy of a watercolour by Colonel Edward Arthur Williams and is almost the same, apart from the placement of the soldiers, as a watercolour by Williams in the Turnbull Library entitled Picket at Nukumaru, 30 Jan.y 65.
