Description: Panoramic view across a field to a collection of farm buildings. There is a road on the far left and a driveway from it leading to a garage. A car is parked outside the garage (Number-plate: NZ-82-921) beside which three people are standing; a man wearing overalls and a woman with a small girl. Behind them are several small buildings and a larger barn. In the centre of the image are several wheeled farm implements and a man (just visible) in the middle of a pile of hay on a laden cart drawn by four Clydesdale horses, dogs alongside. Two men are by a large haystack on the right, one on the far side high up with a pitchfork, the other on the near side standing at the foot of a ladder. A few sheep in one of several sheep pens centre right; single-storeyed building behind the pens. Flock of sheep in paddocks in the middle distance, farmland all around. Taken by Robert Percy Moore. Description: Albumen prints of Fijian people, a photograph of Dunedin taken by J R Morris, and newspaper cuttings about the SS Mataura were inserted in the front pocket of the album. (The albumen prints have now been placed in protective sleeves and are housed in an envelope outside the album) Album of photographs, albumen prints of popular art works, maps, hand-written and illuminated programmes, and one hand-written poem, created by William Fox Wheeler between 1864 and 1869, during which he was purser on board the SS Mataura. Most of the art-works and hand-written and illustrated items were done by William Fox Wheeler himself. Items of unusual interest are listed below. A map "shewing mail services performed by the Panama, New Zealand & Australian Royal Mail Company, and lines connecting with the company's vessels at Panama" (between p. 46-47). Interspersed with albumen prints of popular art works such as "The Angel Gabriel", "Mother & child", "The Last farewell of Marie Antoinette", and "Fascination" are scenes of places visited by the SS Mataura in the 1860s. Numbers of images show scenes in New Zealand, many of which are unidentified. Several are small portraits of Maori men and women. The album contains a page with early New Zealand, German, Australian and United States postage stamps. A photograph of a painting by Gustavus Von Tempsky showing "`Waiari' scene of conflict with the rebel Maoris on the 11th February 1864" is on page 27. Description: Photographs collected by Mrs Esther Ecclesfield for her daughter Esma Ecclesfield (i.e. Esther Mary Ecclesfield, later known as Esther Mary North, or Esma North). None of the people shown are identified. Several images show camping and views of bays on Waiheke island. Many of the photographs were taken in the Napier area, including several of a woman and two young girls with bicycles standing outside a house in Seaview terrace, Napier, and an interior view of the house; yachts; the Napier Arcade, with the Arcadia Tea-Rooms; children at a Napier beach; and a horse-drawn carriage travelling through water along the foreshore to Cape Kidnappers. Page 4 shows the original Otatara (Ashridge) homestead. Various views around Wellington include Lower Hutt, Belmont Road, Wilton's Bush, Breaker Bay, Muritai and Titahi Bay. In the South Island most of the views were taken around Dunedin, showing Tomahawk Beach, Lawyer's Head and "Cargill's Gates" at St. Clair. Inscriptions: Album page - `Esma. With love from Mother. Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Note on this box reads: "1st Ball Hut print" (no. 33); and "J. Martin "Mt Cook"" (no. 66). Most of the places identified are listed above. Other Titles - Old P.O.P.
