Alington, William Herbert, 1841-1938 :Dat tela fidelitas [ca 1900?]

Description: Shows a coat of arms: at the top, a raised forearm and fist holding a stick or rod; in the middle, a shield bearing a blue and gold design, with a bird holding a sprig in its beak top left; at the bottom, the motto 'Dat tela fidelitas' (fidelity provides weapons) It is likely that the 'Winnie' referred to is Winifred Beatrice Alington, nee Durmergue, wife of George Hildebrand (hence 'Mrs Alington'). It would suggest that the coat of arms was made after they were married in 1893, and would seem to have been living in Christchurch. Beatrice and her two daughters, Winifred (Louie) and Hester (Maud), continued to live in Christchurch after George's death in 1905; her son, Edward Hugh, moved to Wellington. Notes at the top mention the related Tipping Family and Belergin (correctly Bellurgan) family. Description: Shows a coat of arms: at the top, a talbot dog with three fleurs-de-lys; below that, a profile view of an armoured helmet; in the middle, a shield bearing a plain symmetrical black and white image; and at the bottom, a red banner bearing the words 'Non pour haine' (not for hatred) The term talbot is used in heraldry to refer to a good-mannered hunting dog. It is likely that the 'Winnie' referred to is Winifred Beatrice Alington, wife of George Hildebrand (hence 'Mrs Alington').
