Description: Top left, 'Mr Wills as he appeared while sketching at Tarawata's Kaik' shows Alfred Wills standing on a beach, with the kainga (kaik) in the background. He has a sketchpad in his hands. Top centre, a (Maori?) man's face, the back view probably of Wills, with a broad-brimmed hand and a pack on his back and a side view of a seated dog. Top right and across the bottom, diary notes for 3 to 7 October. '5 October - reached Waiteruati. 7 October visited the plantation behind the kaik ... Description: Top sketch, a panorama crossing the width of the page, looks north along the beach around the mouth of the Ashburton River at Hakatere, with the tents of the survey camp to the left. It is dated 3 October. Bottom left, 4 October, a night view in the camp with men seated around the fire, tents amongst flax bushes. Bottom right, a scene in a kainga, with a food storage platform to the right, a palisade, a rough hut and the boots and packs of the survey party outside. Probably October 7, south of Hakatere Probably Tarawata's kaik, as described in E-334-053 Inscriptions: Recto - Top of page: Oct 3. 4 & 7 Quantity: 3 drawing(s) on one sheet. Description: View looking north along the beachline, with two food storage platforms and a low building to the right, a food bundle on a stick supported by a pyramid of logs, tents or raupo whare to the left and a European man standing, holding a flag, while a Maori woman crouches behind him, attending to cooking or holding a kete. The word Tipare is inscribed lower left. Mantell's party was close to Hakatere, at the mouth of the Ashburton River, or a little further south, on 7 October. The same kaik, probably Tarawata's, is also shown at E-334-052 and E-334-053 Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Oct 7. [Written across the top of the page, in ink.
