Date: [19--]

From: Harris family: Papers

Reference: MSDL-2037

Description: Electronic document is a first hand account of the 1931 Napier earthquake by John Harris from the ship `HMS Diomede'. Harris recounts the vessels `HMS Dunedin' and `HMS Diomede' sailing from Auckland to come to the aid of the `HMS Veronica' which was aground at Port Ahuriri, Napier after the earthquake. Harris continues to recount the relief effort in Napier and the effect of the earthquake on the local population and their buildings. He relates the task of retrieving dead bodies from the rubble and the subsequent aftershocks which continued to occur in the region. The `HMS Diomede' spent six days in Napier before sailing back to Auckland. The vessel then returned to Napier ten months later and Harris notes the changes in Napier over those months. Harris returned to Napier for the fifitieth anniversary of the disaster in 1981. Harris' original manuscript was transcribed by Ann Baker (date unknown). Quantity: 1 Electronic document(s).
