Description: Title continues:`...a house at Sunrise, 1910-1930'. Elizabeth and Thomas Kempton junior's youngest son Frank Valentine took over the `Elm Grove' property of approximately 600 acres. He and Minnie had two children, Victor and Maisie. The number of cows milked increased to 90, a large herd for those times. Description: Samuel Jackson grew up in the village of Shirley, Derbyshire. His was a labouring family with a small farm. He moved to Manchester, married Maria Amelia Griffiths and immigrated to New Zealand in 1858 on the `Oliver Lang'. They initially lived with Samuel's brother Henry before moving to Greytown. Samuel served in the volunteers in the New Zealand wars. He worked as a farrier and later a veterinary surgeon. An addiction to alcohol led to family problems and a period in prison. Description: Sketch map showing topographical features of an area of land in the Wairarapa from the Tauherenikau River at the bottom of the map to the Taratahi Plain at the top of the map. The left side shows the Moroa Plain and the Waiohine River and the right side shows the Wangaehu [Whangaehu] River. The Ruamahanga River is shown running from the top to the bottom of the map. The locations of the townships of Carterton and Greyton [Greytown] are identified and two areas named as Kaikoka [Ahikouka] and Papawai. Morrison's farm [possibly Morison's Bush] is also identified. Two spot heights are named as Haldon Hill and Warleigh Hill. Red lines suggest possible roads as one is identified as "new line of road". An annotation written at the top right corner of the map where six dots point to a river dividing into two, states "Hence [indecipherable word] junction of the Waingawa & Ruamahanga is 1.3/4 miles". The farm identified as "Morison's farm" was a farm station initially called Hakeke, later Glenmorven, located near Greytown, Wairarapa. From 1846 it was run by Hugh Morrison (1782-1872) and Anne, nee Turner (1800?-1844). The area is known as Morison's Bush or Morrison's Bush. Two branches of the Morison/ Morrison family spell their name differently. The family at Greytown use “Morison” – those at Blairlogie, near Masterton use the double ‘r’. Description: The collection consists of one letter from James Beard to his father, 1858, the opening lines of another letter addressed to 'father' but in a different hand (presumably Ann's) and copies of photographs. Also letters from family in England to James and Ann. Most of these were written by Ann's father, Charles Potts, and a cousin, Elizabeth Bowker and cover the period 1858-1886. The collection also contains genealogical notes which appear to have been prepared by one or more of James's and Ann's children early in the twentieth century Included are letters from Ann's sister Emma Hardman and cousin Elizabeth Bowker in Stockport, 1867-1886. The letters are concerned chiefly with family news.
