Description: Photographs of a range of industries in New Zealand, possibly related to the Christchurch International Exhibition in 1906-1907. Industries include animal related products including wool, from fellmongery to transportation and finally weaving; meat works, including the slaughter house, the mutton cooling room, shipping fozen mutton, the beef cooling room; butter, at the Hautapu Butter Factory, showing butter in the factory, and delivering butter at Ngaruawahia Railway Station; the Waikato Bacon Factory, and pig carcases. Other industries include flax, with scenes showing a flax mill, carting flax to the mill, stripping, washing and drying flax, and also grading hemp and loading bales of it at Auckland wharves; kauri timber industry, from felling the trees, hauling logs by bullock, floating logs over the Wairoa Falls, sorting timber at the mill booms, timber mill on the Wairoa River, and a million feet of sawn timber at the mill. The latter part of the album shows scenes of gold dredging on the Buller Gorge, hydraulic gold-mining at Ross, Westland; coal mining at Brunner; kauri gum diggers and a warehouse storing kauri gum; and finally views of the Sugar Refinery in Auckland, and a warehouse filled with sacks of sugar. Description: Scrap book of miscellaneous photographs, many of which have no captions and have not been identified. At the front of the album is an undated newspaper cutting showing the original building used for the Colonial Museum in 1865, which `has been revealed by the pulling down of the Dominion Museum, at the back of Parliament House. For many years this building has been used for a variety of purposes, museum exhibits being housed in adjacent quarters, but it is about to be demolished'. The first group show interior scenes of the Canterbury Museum, with exhibits of bird skeletons, and mounted birds. Other scenes show mounted animals, possibly not in Canterbury. Scenery includes views of the Franz Josef Glacier; and a number which are identified showing the gold-mining area around Ross and Donoghues, the Totara River and Mikonui River. One page has six photographs of mountainous regions in Switzerland; several show the area near the Wellington caves in Queensland, Australia; and two views show the breaking of the Cook Strait Cable. Railways album 8

Description: Album of photographs of scenes, advertisements and posters advertising rail and ferry travel in New Zealand. The advertisements were used in The New Zealand Railways Magazine, and the posters were displayed at Railways Ticket Offices. The posters, and advertisements using "Mr Goodseat" were part of their campaign to show the advantages of travel by rail. The artist for many of these signed himself 'Matthews'. Scenic photographs also show some aspects of life in New Zealand, including a series on the flax industry with harvesting, drying and processing the fibres. Another group shows a farm, including a house made of corrugated iron, with sacking covering the windows; land clearing and ploughing with horses, draining the land, and a pile of harvested kumara; and several photographs of a man panning for gold, and inspecting pieces of rock with a magnifying glass; a group of men on horseback with dogs setting out on a hunt, and a cage full of pheasants before being released for the shoot. Pages 78-81 show activities associated with the mail service. They include people buying stamps in a post office, men sorting mail, large bags prepared for out-of-town delivery (some bags being delivered to the inter-island ferry for transport to the South Island). From there they show postmen emerging from the Chief Post Office with their satchels ready for local delivery, with the final scenes of delivery into a household letterbox, and one of a woman being handed her mail at the door. There are a number of much earlier photographs in the album, including pictures of Major Ropata, Sir Donald McLean, John Webster and F E Maning, and one of Te Aro in 1857. Advertisements included "Buy New Zealand made goods, for the children's sake. Cut these cords. Unemployment"; an advertisement for Hannah's footwear using a photograph of The Mystery train" (advertising a trip to Paraparaumu Beach, and another to Ohau). Several photographs show large groups of people who travelled on the Mystery Train, picnicking at the beach at Paraparaumu, boiling up a huge billy, and a child in a backpack on her father's back). Description: Photograph album of New Zealand scenes The first sequence contains views of the road from Christchurch to the West Coast, taken by Daniel Mundy in February 1868. Another group are of further scenes in the South Island taken by the Burton Brothers around the Dunedin area. There are several views of Scotland and England, including one of the Brendon Hill Incline, an iron-mining area in Exmoor, and a view of the Larkworthy family castle in Aberdeenshire (name of the castle not clear in album). Later views in the album are taken by unidentified photographers, and include scenes of the Franz Josef Glacier, with the Waiho River; sluicing for gold at Black Gully; a tubular flume at Donnellys Creek; the Totara Ferry; viaduct at Jones' Creek; bush at Donoghues; and views of Ross and Hokitika. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai. Description: Gold dredges, gold sluicing, and machinery associated with gold mining in the South Island. Includes a few photographs taken in Australia, particularly the Pioneer Tin Mine in Tasmania. Inserted in a pocket in the front of the album are 19 loose prints, chiefly showing various claims in the North Island, some of which are taken by H J Locke. Also named in these images are the Saxon Mine and Ivanhoe Mine. Pinafore Claim was located at Waiotahi, Thames. Cambria Claim was a gold mine located in Thames. Burton brothers album 16

Description: Album of early New Zealand scenes, mainly taken by the Burton Brothers. Images include gold digging, gold dredging (image of Sew Hoy's dredge), and gold sluicing, one showing the flume on a Scandinavian race at St Bathans. There are a number of views of the Pink and White Terraces, scenes of Maori life in the King Country, and scenic views of Dunedin and the Queenstown-Lakes District. Description: Album of photographs, chiefly taken by Sir Thomas Hunter. Many of the images are of tramping, camping and climbing holidays with friends and family, both in the North Island (Lake Waikaremoana, the far north, and in the Ruapehu and Taupo Districts), and the South Island (Greenstone River, gold sluicing and gold panning at Moonlight, Queenstown and Wanaka). Most scenes state the location, but very few people are identified, and then only by Christian name. McLennan album

Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. There are a large number relating to Maori, especially at Whakarewarewa, with taniko weaving, flax weaving, poi dancers, te hongi, and posed portraits of young girls in front of a meeting house wearing different styles of cloaks. Wheeler and son album 2

Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea.
