Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1927 and 1955, mostly in the Wellington Region. Some are art photographs, including still life images of carvings, cloisonne ware and porcelain, and some are tinted. One sequence shows the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery, both interior and exterior views. Some were taken in April 1936 before the building was furnished; others were taken later in 1936 and 1937, including the Kauri Hall, the Sculpture Hall, the Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Academy Gallery, the Maori Hall, and the entrance vestibule. Civic events are shown in illuminations at the Government Buildings for the King George V Silver Jubilee on 12th May 1935; the Carillon tower floodlit for for the coronation of King George VI; and night photographs of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in 1940, including the Australian and British pavilions. Wellington is shown in views from various hills and rooftops. Specific trips and occasions include a Waikaremoana trip in 1930; the Victoria University College Natural History Society trip to Butterfly Creek in 1933; a Camera Club outing near Mangaroa Hill in 1938; and celebrating Xmas in Auckland in 1952. Searle album 2

Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Roland James Searle, circa 1930s. The first subject is the opening of the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial (Cenotaph), and includes a programme of the dedication and handing over on Sunday 17th April, 1932 (p 001-012). That is followed by the consecration ceremony for the National War Memorial and War Memorial Carillon (again with a copy of the programme), held on Anzac Day, April 25th, 1932 (p 015-023). Pages 029-033 show the arrival of the Wellington Jubilee Dock in 1931, the floating dock which was towed from England by two Dutch tugboats. The next sequence is entitled "The Express pulls out - Thorndon", and follows the Express to Wanganui where views show a river-boat trip up the Whanganui River (p 037-056), and include a map of historical areas on the river compiled by Annabell & Marchant, surveyors of Wanganui (p 055). The train trip is continued in the next section, and includes an illustrated diagram of the Raurimu Spiral, then arrival at the new Beach Road Auckland Railway Station. Photographs of Auckland include the Auckland Institute and Museum, Auckland University, Grafton Bridge, a sailing ship at the wharves, and the Auckland Zoo. Further North there are scenes of ploughing, a mine entrance, rock formations at Waro, and the Taheke Falls; before travelling to Rotorua and the surrounding thermal regions. A number of images were taken at Whakarewarewa, including photos of Paul Thomas and his wife, along with scenes showing women washing clothes in hot pools, a woman with a baby on her back holding a rope with a food basket cooking in the pool, children in a hot pool, and men at work carving. Paul Thomas wrote to thank Searle for sending him copies of photographs (p 101, written on May 1st 1932). Later photographs again with the train often in view show timber felling and milling, and views of the Arapuni hydroelectic power station. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). South African war album

Description: Photographs of the North Island Regiment of the New Zealand Army 8th Contingent in preparation for leaving on the troopship Surrey to fight in the South African War. These photographs were taken by Alfred Jones & Co. mostly in Auckland. They include views of speeches by Richard John Seddon, and General Babington in Auckland., and the departure of the Surrey from Auckland. Other images show the Surrey in Wellington Harbour, rowing eights in the harbour and the Contingent's military camp in Newtown. Two views show warships in Wellington Harbour and a decorated gateway in the city for the Duke of York's visit to New Zealand. There are a number of views of the processions and ceremonies for the funeral of Cecil Rhodes in Cape Town. Richard Seddon's visit to the Hudson's Soap Works in Liverpool is shown in several photographs taken by an unidentified photographer. Page 45 shows a "review at Pretoria" at which there was a "presentation of V.C.s and also a Royal Humane Society medal to Sergt. Cassidy N.Z.M.R. by Lord Roberts". The information is hand-written over the photograph as a Christmas greeting. Inserted in an envelope is a sheet of paper with the signatures of "Colonel Wyndham and the Officers of the Imperial Representative Corps". (Colonel Wyndham was with the 21st Lancers).
