Description: Photographs on album pages: photograph of Mount Peel Station, its interior and grounds including Mr Acland in his study, his daughters and their friends identified by inititals, including one of L D Acland and B B Acland, the latter knitting a sock, and the Church of the Holy Innocence viewed across a field of hay stacks with the forest planted by Acland behind it; more of the same women boating and picnicking, including a view of a gorge taken by Harriet Acland, a church interior and Bishop Harper playing cricket with a young boy; Ilam homestead covered in clematis with balconies and verandahs and extensive grounds next to the Avon River, and the Watts Russell family group at Pareora August 1894 with their dog and saddled horses in the background; the West Coast Times printing office with the men outside it, C G Tripp and family and a Centerbury view; and two views of Tripp's homestead at Orari. Description: Photographs of: a group of men with spades digging for gum amongst kauri trees; a group of Maori men, women and children gathered around the hot pools at Whakarewarewa, with the men are pulling on ropes attached to something in the pool, captioned "`Parekohoro' - Whakarewarewa"; and two photographs, one a close-up, of Seddon and party on a waka. They are captioned "The Premier's Visit to Huntly on the Waikato in the war canoe Taheretikitiki" and "The Premier's Visit to Huntly on board the war canoe on way to King Mahuta's residence Waahi". Description: Comprise two diaries, covering Taylor's voyage to New Zealand and his life in Wellington, the Manawatu region, and finally Auckland. The diaries are detailed and provide a lively account of life on an immigrant ship and in the North Island while looking for work. Interspersed with reflections on life and quotations from poems, as well as some sketches of people, ships, housing and scenery. Source of title - Supplied by Library Other - The donor is happy for researchers to contact him, for possible further information. His address is 16/166 Mill Point Road, South Perth, WA 6151, Australia. Charles Henry Taylor, lived on the Isle of Man as a child, was a joiner by trade. In 1878 he took advantage of the Vogel government's immigration scheme to emigrate to New Zealand on the `Hudson'. Travelled through Wellington, the Manawatu, where he was an eyewitness to the great bush fires of the period, and to Auckland, looking, often unsuccessfully, for work.
