Description: Album begins with Wellington Hospital in about 1927/28 and shows the new buildings which opened in 1928, the nurses home and Toxwood's hospital buildings of 1880. There are many photographs of nurses, some staged in operating theatres with doctors and nurses arround the patient, one administering chloroform onto a fabric pad over the patients face. The rest of the photographs in the album relate to Doris Pedersen's work in maternity hospitals and hospitals specialising in the care of very young children. These include Alexandra Children's Hospital, Karitane Hospital, a hospital in a large late victorian house with a big garden, and Dr Doris and William Gordon's Marire Private Hospital in Stratford.. Description: Aerial views, exterior views and interior views of the Gear Meat Company at Petone, between 1955 and 1963. Includes sheep in holding pens, various areas of the meat works showing activities such as skinning, whole carcasses, various stages of preparation for packaging meat for the local market and for transport overseas; further products including canned meat; tallow; hides; wool; and fertilizer. Vehicles for the transportation of meat include ships at London Docks unloading frozen carcasses, and a fleet of delivery vans for the local wholesale trade. One photograph shows Prince Philip (the Duke of Edinburgh) visiting the meat works in 1956, coincidentally at the time of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Gear Meat company. Different Gear Meat Company shops are shown, in Jackson Street, Petone; in Upper Hutt; and at 94/98 Lambton Quay. The first `Primary Fresh Foods' shop opened by the company at 12 Bunny Street, Lower Hutt, is seen on opening day with a delicatessen section as well as meat department. There are exterior and interior views of the different shops. A number of views show hostel accomodation for meat workers, showing exterior views, a bedroom, a kitchen for communal use, and a social hall. The final section shows the Gear Meat stall at Hutt Valley Industries Fair, 19-27 August, 1960; and their stall at the Manawatu & West Coast Agricultural & Pastoral Association Show in November 1962. An envelope inserted at the back of the album contains views of sheep holding pens, further scenes of the interior of an abatoir, and one view of the Gear Homestead. Railways album 8

Description: Album of photographs of scenes, advertisements and posters advertising rail and ferry travel in New Zealand. The advertisements were used in The New Zealand Railways Magazine, and the posters were displayed at Railways Ticket Offices. The posters, and advertisements using "Mr Goodseat" were part of their campaign to show the advantages of travel by rail. The artist for many of these signed himself 'Matthews'. Scenic photographs also show some aspects of life in New Zealand, including a series on the flax industry with harvesting, drying and processing the fibres. Another group shows a farm, including a house made of corrugated iron, with sacking covering the windows; land clearing and ploughing with horses, draining the land, and a pile of harvested kumara; and several photographs of a man panning for gold, and inspecting pieces of rock with a magnifying glass; a group of men on horseback with dogs setting out on a hunt, and a cage full of pheasants before being released for the shoot. Pages 78-81 show activities associated with the mail service. They include people buying stamps in a post office, men sorting mail, large bags prepared for out-of-town delivery (some bags being delivered to the inter-island ferry for transport to the South Island). From there they show postmen emerging from the Chief Post Office with their satchels ready for local delivery, with the final scenes of delivery into a household letterbox, and one of a woman being handed her mail at the door. There are a number of much earlier photographs in the album, including pictures of Major Ropata, Sir Donald McLean, John Webster and F E Maning, and one of Te Aro in 1857. Advertisements included "Buy New Zealand made goods, for the children's sake. Cut these cords. Unemployment"; an advertisement for Hannah's footwear using a photograph of The Mystery train" (advertising a trip to Paraparaumu Beach, and another to Ohau). Several photographs show large groups of people who travelled on the Mystery Train, picnicking at the beach at Paraparaumu, boiling up a huge billy, and a child in a backpack on her father's back). Godber album 8

Description: Album of photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1912 and 1914. Images include Godber's family, a few of identified people (names listed in the name file), and many with no identification. One image of a group of fitters and turners apprentices at the Petone Railway Workshops, taken in 1913, has all the apprentices named (listed in the full record for Godber negative, APG-0457-1/2) Views of the old Central Fire Station at Petone, and the new Petone Fire Brigade Station; the aftermath of a huge fire at Cooks' Cooperage (on January 14, 1914); and a locomotive which had rolled. Local Petone scenes include the Petone Council Chambers and town clock, and a number of houses in the area, including the home of Godber's friend Tom Mather; Korokoro bush, and the Korokoro Reservoir. Away from the Wellington area, Godber photographed a number of houses in Clonbern Road area; the Makatote Viaduct and the Manganui-o-te-Ao Viaduct.
