Description: Letter, written from Parrurua [ie Porirua] Road, describes the voyage to New Zealand, their arrival in Wellington, setting up their accommodation house and life in Wellington. Bishop Selwyn's visit is also described in the letter. Description: The reminiscences cover the period 1839 to 1914 and most are based on Taine's own experience although they contain also an outline of the early history of the colony from other sources. He came to New Zealand aged 22 on the `Adelaide' and lived in Wellington till 1862 when he moved to Dunedin. After 1879 Taine lived in Auckland. At the end of volume 3 there is a section on early Wellington street names. Also (volume 3 p 515) there is a note on the history of Waiwera which Taine frequently visited. Description: Letter written by Samuel Oates from Peach Grove, Greytown to his brother and sister in England. Peach Grove was the name of the family farm of Samuel and Jane Oates who emigrated to New Zealand from Derbyshire in 1852 and 1856 respectiviely. The letter is only partial correspondence and is not signed. Oates details life on the farm and the success of his corn crop and the difficulties exterminating rabbits. Also mentions local personalities including the recent death of Samuel Moles and the farming success of John Reynolds. This section of the letter ends with comments on Dr Featherston and his role as New Zealand agent general. Source of title - Supplied by Library Samuel and Jane Oates lived at Peach Grove on the Taratahi Plain, Wairarapa. They owned 300 acres and were prominent members of the local community.
