Description: A panoramic view of New Plymouth viewed from the sea, with Gannet and Albatross Islands on the right, the Wai Tera (Waitara) 'originally fixed on for the New Plymouth Settlement", the 'present site of New Plymouth' (before any houses were built) - all on the left side of the panorama. On the right are Mount Egmont, 'Barrett's [Accommodation] Houses and Hotel', 'Native Pah' and the Sugar Loaf Islands 'The islands on which Barrett defeated 5000 natives' In 'Information relating to New Plymouth (London, Smith Elder, 1841). p. 9-10, under 'Climate and soil' 'Mr G. Duppa states:- 'Amongst other sketches, I have sent you a panoramic view of the Sugar Loaves, Mount Egmont, and the Taranaki district generally, which I made when I went down there in the Brougham, with the Plymouth Company's surveyors. It will give you a better idea of the country than any verbal description I could give, beyond a few observations. The land for about three miles inland is slightly undulating, but not so steep but that a plough would go over the whole of it ... It is for the most part covered with fern and brushwood (which fire levels with the ground) for several miles inland, when you first meet with groves of timber, present a most park-like aspect ...' Description: Collection consists of the papers of William Edward Hay; his wife, Mary Hay; his mother, also Mary Hay and his second son, Charles William Hay. Source of title - Supplied title William Edward and his wife, Mary Hay (nee Tindall) emigrated to Christchurch on the `Mermaid' in 1864. After eighteen months without steady work they moved to Hokitika where William tried his luck at the gold-diggings before taking up a permanent position with the `West Coast Times'. Late in 1871, the family moved to Melbourne but less than a year later they were back in New Zealand living in Dunedin, where William set up in business as a cabinet maker. In 1877, William's mother, Mary and eldest son, Benjamin, a dentist, came out to New Zealand. Shortly afterwards, William shifted to Auckland where he worked on the staff of the `Evening Post'. Description: Two contrasting scenes. On the left ("Here". i.e England), a vagrant family of parents and four barefooted ragged children, standing outside a building, with smokestacks in the background. There is a notice on the door of the building heading 'caution all vagrants'. On the right ('There' i.e. somewhere in the colonies) is a family that has emigrated to one of the colonies, an interior scene with well-fed children and the parents at a groaning table, with hams and a animal carcass hanging above and the mother just serving a dish, while the father carves. A dog is seated at the table and a baby is in a cradle on the floor. There is a palm tree or tree fern visible through the window to the outside, and a dark-skinned native is being served a dish by the oldest daughter of the family.
