Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, between 1900 and 1905. The images follow on from McIntosh album 15, (these are pages 815-835) starting at Opunake (a church building). Pihama (a memorial to members of the crew of the barque Lizzie Bell which was wrecked off Oeo, 24th July 1901), a view of the Oeo Hotel (F. Morgan, proprietor), and a view of the mast of the Lizzie Bell standing as a memorial at Pihama. These are followed by a panorama of Parihaka (p. 822-823), and a portrait of a man named Ruru, at Parihaka. The rest of the album has scenes in the Auckland area, including a view of Queen Street in which the chemist shop of Charles J Ratgen is clearly visible. A series of images show various Maori artifacts on display at the Auckland Museum. Scenery in Auckland includes the Auckland Domain, Epsom, Tamaki, Auckland Harbour, Rangitoto, St Heliers, Mount Hobson and Mount Eden. Two church buildings are seen, one at Opunake, and the remains of a stone church at Tamaki. A group of photographs show horse-drawn carriages decorated with flowers for a floral fete (p 835-838). Description: A two part picture, showing heavy snow falling on small island on left, pylons weighted down with snow and couple by small fire made from last surviving trees, trying to cut through Cook Strait cable with an axe; whilst on righthand island, with its healthy pylons, man rests comfortably in armchair, hat and scarf, in front of TV which announces:"Storms bash S.I. Possible cuts". Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Eric Heath; Recto - beneath image - [Title] (very faded); Recto - beneath image - (Written in crayon on the glass, by Norman Webb, because original had faded): [Title] Appeared in the Dominion for 8 March 1973. "New Zealand energy journal", vol. 48 (Dec 1975) pages 261-263, has article entitled "A study of the implications of cutting the Cook Strait cable", by P D Lucas, B A Murtagh, and B R Smith; this tells that power had been conveyed from South to North for more than a decade, but that in recent years, South Islanders had been dissatisfied with shortages they had been forced to endure because of the power needs of the North Island. Description: Comprises strips of contact prints pasted on paper sheets. Taken by Charles Trevor Pugh between circa 1963 to 1975. Most images relate to the Manapouri hydro station, including two launches 'Endeavour II' at Supply Bay and the launch 'Resolution', West Arm, control room, buildings and seaplane, electricity pylons, the machine hall, cable connections, the CO2 bank, and the access tunnel. Also includes views of a senior staff review course. Images also include various unnamed hydro stations, derelict Maori meeting-house, Lake Waikaremoana, New Zealand Electricity Department staff on a boat trip and at lunch and in lecture room, Aratiatia Power Project beautification, unidentified women wearing hard hats on a hydro construction site visit, and a helicopter assisting with the erecting of electricity pylons on farmland.
