A comment from the helicopter is 'Not ugly...Just architecturally challenged!'. The new buildings being put up in the aftermath of the Christchutrch earthquakes and demolition, owing to the constraints of excessive earthquake standards and cost, were drab, cheap-looking and unimaginative. Refers to the condition of Christchurch City after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011; the western wealthier suburbs were less damaged than the poorer Eastern suburbs. Also, progress on repair and rehabilitation of eastern housing had been slow. Description: Orana Wildlife Park 'lodge' sleeps passengers from Christchurch airport with no accommodation and who would otherwise sleep at the terminal. The Park staff think that 'they get free accommodation and we have a new paying exhibit!' They have also put up a notice: 'Cheapskates - Do not feed'. Is this a solution to airport 'night kippers'? Description: The population of Christchurch, including animals, wade through flood waters on stilts. One citizen remarks 'Think this is bad...wait 'til Friday's storm rolls in!' In mid June the earthquake-damaged drainage systems of Christchurch struggled to cope with flooding and with melting snow, especially among the more liquefaction-prone eastern areas of the city where the water table had risen by 15 centimetres. They confess "we might have trouble ignoring the condition of this place!" but as the cartoonist comments, "they'll still try!". In post-earthquake Christchurch the inhabitants found the EQC to be overly restrictive and rigid in their assessment of earthquake-damaged buildings, even though bad weather (and the snow storm of June 2013) had many homes barely habitable. Description: A cartoon of a settlement consisting entirely of tents and labelled '"Tentleton"'. The tents and inhabitants, both in stages of disrepair, are in streets signposted as 'Squalor St', 'Destitute Drive' and 'Winz Way'. The 'attractions' of the settlement include 'No covenants. All pets. Own longdrop. No rates. solar heating'. The cartoon is captioned 'Another Christchurch sub-division'. It was reported on 12 December 2013 that since the 2011 earthquake the number of people with dire needs on Housing New Zealand's waiting list had tripled, with 39 families in Christchurch more in need of housing than a woman who had moved her family into a tent in a public park.
