Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1905 and 1907, covering a variety of topics. They include family photographs, both individual and group portraits, and Wellington houses (eg `Railway Whare', the house Godber and his family lived in, in Bay Street, Petone). One scene shows Godber's parents, Mary Ann and Charles Godber, with a large group of family members, including Albert Percy Godber, his wife Laura, and two children, Phyllis and William (p.21). On p. 13, Godber's wife Laura and two children are seen with an elderly couple, probably Laura's parents Charles Albert and Magdelina Clara Zinckgraf. Numbers of images show scenes associated with New Zealand Railways, including the Mataroa Railway Tunnel under construction, specific locomotives, signal stations, the railway station at Petone, and scenes at the Petone Railway Workshops. At the beginning of the album, several images show Godber and a team from the Petone Fire Brigade with medals they have won at fire-fighting practice competitions. A pocket at the front of the album holds two photographs, on of a new cutting on the road near Lowry Bay, and one of the `model of `D' class locomotive used in the Petone Peace Demonstration Procession' following the Boer War in 1902, signed `With A.P. Description: The Hutt Road (a cart track) at the bottom of the steep bush-clad Western Hills on the right. The buildings of the Scottish settlement at Kaiwharawhara can be seen on flat land in the middle distance to the right, with suggested outlines of a few houses in Thorndon beyond. Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1915 and 1916. Many of the images show various aspects of logging in Piha and Karekare. Views include the Piha Tramway, bush railway inclines, scenes of lumbermen cutting down kauri trees and cross-cutting felled trees, transportation of logs by bullock teams and horse-drawn rail wagons, the Piha timber camp and mill and men at everyday activities in camp buildings and in their workmen's huts. Other sections of the album show views of Petone, and Godber's family (his wife, Laura Godber, and two children, Phyllis and William (Bill)); views of the central North Island; farming in the Mendip Hills (Canterbury); and views of Trentham. Description: Shows a coach and four about to cross a bridge over Ngauranga stream in the foreground. The Hutt Road is visible to the right. Three buildings, including Futter's Tavern in the background. There is a half-canoe monument to Te Wharepouri, upright in the ground beyond the buildings and below the hills Quite possibly a copy of an earlier work by another artist. Other known historical paintings by Rollason appear to be copied. He was known to be painting around 1900. See 'Ngauranga, late 1840s' negative 19460 1/2 for a possible original for Rollason's painting. The artist for 'Ngauranga, late 1840s' is unknown and the photographic print was among collection items held by Anthony Murray-Oliver, with no accompanying documentation. It seems likely that the painting was lent for copying in the 1960s. One extra detail in 'Ngauranga, late 1840s' is a cross on top of the hill closest to the sea; however, it lacks the additional cart and horse on the far side of the stream. The painting includes a view of Futter's Tavern. See also Brees, S.C. Description: A rocky foreshore and cliff in the foreground, possibly Kaiwharawhara, or further along the Hutt Road at Rocky Point looking towards Khandallah and Ngaio. Only two houses are shown amidst bushy hills. In the foreground a European man is on horseback, accompanied by a Maori man and woman. Another European is standing near a Maori man while the latter pushes a small canoe out from the rocks. A single yacht is in the water. Date of 1865 is suggested because an F. R. Chesney wrote to James Coutts Crawford from Tasmania on geological matters in December 1864 and may have come later to Wellington as a visitor. Wellington became the capital in 1865. The view appears to be quite early with only two houses showing and Maori shown in partial European dress. The signature on the letter from Tasmania matches that on the watercolour. Chesney's letter makes it clear that he is a resident in Tasmania and that English is probably his first language, suggesting that the French title may have been added by a later owner Other Titles - Nouvelle Zelande, Port de Nicholson.
