Description: Chiefly photographs of Ireland and New Zealand (particularly Auckland). Appears to have been compiled by an Irish officer with the Imperial forces during the 1860s. Among the New Zealand views are photographs taken by John Kinder and Lieutenant-Colonel J H Rocke, 18th Royal Irish Regiment Photographs of people are not identified in the album, but have been identified by comparison with other photographs, and include Judge William Martin and his wife, and Governor Gore Browne and his family. Description: Photographs taken during the 1880s and 1890s, chiefly by Henry Charles Clarke Wright, with others probably taken by Herbert Deveril. All show scenes in New Zealand except one, prabably taken by J W Lindt, of an Australian aboriginal man and woman standing over a kangaroo which they have caught. They have boomerangs and a spear. Photographs of the town of Tarawera and the White Terraces were taken before the eruption in 1886. Quantity: 1 album(s). Description: Auckland City from Mechanics Bay (now Stanley Street). The houses on the cliff in the middle distance mark the southern end of Official Bay. A flag flies on Point Britomart and on the higher ground to the left are St Paul's, the Barracks and the business enterprises at the top of Shortland Crescent. Government House lies in the sheltered hollow on the left. The complete spire on St Paul's suggests the painting was done after March 1844, the date of completion of the spire. The foreground is framed with tall flowering flax on the right and cabbage trees and other trees on the left. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink and wash, 161 x 244 mm

Description: A scene with with a waterfront road, a breakwater and jetty. Between Mechanics Bay in the foreground and Commercial Bay in the background where several ships are anchored, is a distinctive high mound, the end of the Britomart promontory. On top of the headland at the left is a church (St Pauls) with a red wooden spire. To its right is the Albert Barracks. Below this is Emily Place. Ships' masts in the background are those moored at Queen's Wharf St Paul's Church was demolished in 1884, so the picture shows a scene before that date. The breakwater in Mechanics Bay dates from the 1870s. The mound shown is the end of Britomart Point with a road cut through on its left. This cutting was made around 1875, part of the reclamation of land and cutting a road through Britomart Point. The remaining mound was demolished over the next few years. Quantity: 1 oil(s). Description: A yacht and a jetty in the water at the left, the beach and a road centre, houses to the right and in the distance on the surrounding hills. Two men and a woman in front of the nearer houses, one of the men carrying a yoke with heavy buckets, possibly containing milk or water. Exhibited at 'The world was all before me; journals and watercolours of Edward Ashworth from the collections of Alexander Turnbull Library', Curator was Jill Trevelyan. The exhibition title is taken from Ashworth's journal where he misquotes from John Milton's poem "Paradise Lost": "The world was all before me / where to choose my place of rest".
