Description: View along Invercargill's main street showing a number of houses and businesses. The earliest known view of Invercargill Between 1969, the time of acquisition by the Library, and 2010, attributed to W B D Mantell, based on handwriting, style of drawing and the fact that Mantell worked with Douglas, and was involved in the early settlement of Invercargill. However Mantell was in England in 1858, the date of this drawing. The drawing was earlier owned by Gerhard Mueller, who arrived in New Zealand in 1859, the year after this drawing was made. The `Pearson' whose house is drawn is W H Pearson, Commissioner of Lands, 1857-1884. `Grief' the butcher was J M Grieve. The Albion Hotel was also known as Linds Accommodation House. Other Titles - Douglas, Charles Edward Inscriptions: Recto - bottom centre - title in pen and ink. Along top, identifications of buildings include Whites store, Collins store, Collins Goods, Grief Butcher, Pearsons House, Butchershop, Royal Hotel. Description: Shows the interior of Te Punaomara Pa, Waitaki River, with food storage platforms, a whare, cooking pots on a fire, a blanket hung up to dry. A Maori woman is seated on the ground, wrapped in a blanket, and a man is seated in the distance. To the left is a European man drawing in his sketchbook (probably Mantell's travelling companion and fellow-surveyor, Alfred Wills), while the artist's own boots and pack are in the centre foreground. A dog is also seated to the right. Description: Shows the Akaroa foreshore with James Bruce's hotel and jetty, tents and cottages, a flagpole, canoes and a bridge over the small Kaitangata Stream, with hills beyond. Some figures appear to be Maori, and there are crossed canoe paddles forming the open end of the tent or whare on the right. The view is located in southern Akaroa, in 'English Town' Compare with ink sketch of same scene, with same title and date, also by Mantell (A-049-023). Description: Shows two cottages close to one another, one with a thatched roof, at a bend on the banks of the Avon, in a treeless landscape, close to Barbadoes Street, the landing place for boats coming up the Avon from the Estuary and sea. The Bricks was built of bricks made by the Deans brothers of Riccarton. There are several other smaller buildings on the right. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - title and date in ink: 'The Bricks' Wed Nov 1851, Canterbury, looking north. Description: 6 drawings on one page, showing from top left, two views of storage platforms titled Te Owiwa or Te Owina, and 'forries and futters' [whares and whatas]. The 3rd view is of a pa alongside a river, with a whare and a storage platform, the 4th of a large egg, possibly a moa's egg. The 5th is titled W te R. Remains of pa f... Hap 1851 and another illegible word. It shows several carved niu poles, and a cabbage tree, with a plain and hills beyond and an unidentified object in front on the ground. The 6th is titled Ruataniwha and dated Sept 7, and is signed A. W. (Alfred Wills). Description: A self-drawn moko by an unknown Maori man, Possibly Te Whatanui, with the different parts of the design identified in Maori, e.g. 'Te ngu' for the upper nose area, 'te wha' for the chin area. The tattoo is for the nose, chin and cheek. In the background is a set of faint drawings by W. B. D. Mantell, including hands holding a plant. On the reverse are several pencil drawings by Mantell of Maori carvings, a whare or cottage, and a hut, inscribed 'Otaki 1844' 'Te Whatanui's whata, Ranginui, Otaki'.
