Description: Six-panelled account of Captain Cook's arrival in New Zealand in 1769 and speculations about the identity of Nicholas Young, who first sighted Poverty Bay from the Endeavour and after whom Young Nick's Head is named These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore. In fact, more was known of 'Young Nick' than the cartoonist realised. Description: Shows "Gulf of Shouraka" (Hauraki Gulf), Coromandel, Waiheke district, soundings, and some Maori and English placenames (sometimes mis-spelt). Shows Manukau and Waitemata harbours. River Thames refers to the Firth of Thames. Compiled largely from the work of Dumont D'Urville and crew of Astrolabe, 1827, during his exploration of New Zealand, and possibly others. Possibly taken from British Admiralty Chart of the same area published in 1836 - (from Brian Hooker). Drawn by Mudie for the Clint's Establishment, Sydney, ca. 1838 (see AT 13/13 8.7.91 (Hooker)). Description: Journal records his work cutting and forming tracks between Canterbury and the West Coast; meeting with groups of Maori and prospectors; a visit to John Henry Whitcombe's grave at the Taramakau River (he had been drowned on a similar expedition in May 1863) and the wet weather. There is mention of a Maori guide, Jack Tainui, re-burying Whitcombe and marking the grave with two paddles (page 28). Farmer and gold prospector who arrived from Australia to farm in 1860. Leader of a working party contracted by the Canterbury Provincial Government to cut a track to the West Coast, via the Hurunui Plains, Harper Pass and Lake Brunner to the Grey River mouth. Howitt, together with two other members of his party, Robert Little and Henry Miller, disappeared on Lake Brunner on 27 Jun 1863 (the journal ends 20 Jun).
