Description: Collection is made up of `Diary of journey to Taupo Rotorua Rangitikei from Taranaki, 1858' with photocopies of maps and plans removed from back of diary, and sketch map of Taranaki, 1857; also a published version `Notes of a journey from Taranaki to Mokau, Taupo, Rotomahana, Tarawera and Rangitikei' (New Plymouth, Printed at the Taranaki News [1858]), a presentation copy to M A Compton, and two small collections, one of photoprints of maps from MS-2015, the other of loose maps from MS-2015. Description: The papers, transcribed and compiled by John Morgan's great-grandson Robert, include extracts from his diaries and reminiscences. They relate mainly to the 1850s and describe life in Wanganui and Taranaki during this decade, including farming, economic activitity, travelling between New Plymouth and Wanganui and relations between the settlers and Maori. Also included is a description of a trip made by Morgan in 1853 droving sheep from Kai-Iwi to Taranaki published in the `Hawera star', 10 Aug 1935 and a brief talk about John and William Morgan given by Robert Morgan. John Morgan was born in Dorset and emigrated to New Zealand in 1849 aboard the `Berkshire'. After a brief period in Taranaki he settled in Wanganui. Description: Selected records relevant to Australia and New Zealand, re exchange of flags between St Peter's Church School, Sydney and St John's School, Peterborough (1911); records from the Manchester muniments on the activities of the Montagu family, who were involved with the Canterbury Association and owned land in Australia and New Zealand. The papers of George Montagu, the 6th Duke of Manchester and William Montagu, the 7th Duke, contain material relating to their properties on the Darling Downs, Christchurch and the Manawatu region, around Feilding and Halcombe (The Manchester Block).
