Description: Interviews with eighteen former whalers who were based in Tory Channel, Cook Strait. Recorded are their experiences, attitudes and lifestyles when involved in whaling and their experiences and attitudes, including whale watching after the whaling industry ceased being active. Description: Shows three vignettes. In the first a disgruntled looking farmer is watching as armed forces personnel put up a barbed wire fence. The officer is telling him that the government is erecting barbed wire around the coastline. In the second a topdressing pilot is being told to drop bombs instead of fertiliser in the event of any hostilities. In the third an officer is standing on Mt Victoria in Wellington and telling his men that the old signal gun is to be turned around and pointed over Cook Strait. Description: Depicts the lower half of North Island from approximately Hamilton to Gisborne, referred to as Province of North Durham, also the top half of South Island from approximately Greymouth across to Kaikoura, referred to as Province of South Durham. The map is annotated 'The dotted line denotes the boundaries of the provinces' and this line is marked diagonally between Pt. Tebouka kore in the Wellington Region and a point north of Tui Bay in the Taranaki Region. Some bays are named as are points including Kidnappers Pt., and capes including Foulwind, Farewell, Palliser and Egmont. Also named are Queen Charlotte Sound, Cook's Strait, Hawke Bay and the islands D'Urville, Kapiti, Mana and Sugarloaf. Mount Egmont, Ruapehu and Tonga Volcano are marked. Description: A two part picture, showing heavy snow falling on small island on left, pylons weighted down with snow and couple by small fire made from last surviving trees, trying to cut through Cook Strait cable with an axe; whilst on righthand island, with its healthy pylons, man rests comfortably in armchair, hat and scarf, in front of TV which announces:"Storms bash S.I. Possible cuts". Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Eric Heath; Recto - beneath image - [Title] (very faded); Recto - beneath image - (Written in crayon on the glass, by Norman Webb, because original had faded): [Title] Appeared in the Dominion for 8 March 1973. "New Zealand energy journal", vol. 48 (Dec 1975) pages 261-263, has article entitled "A study of the implications of cutting the Cook Strait cable", by P D Lucas, B A Murtagh, and B R Smith; this tells that power had been conveyed from South to North for more than a decade, but that in recent years, South Islanders had been dissatisfied with shortages they had been forced to endure because of the power needs of the North Island. Description: Album chiefly containing views of the North Island of New Zealand, many taken by professional photographers Wrigglesworth and Binns. Images include one of a cricket match between an English team and the Wellington team, March 23-24 1888, at the Basin Reserve, showing spectators in the foreground, the players on the field, and buildings on the hill behind. There are a number of views of the Whanganui River, including a cave, a canoe with 5 men poling through rapids, a view of the river from Hiruharama, and a waterfall. At the end of the album there are images of Port Said, Malabar, and two newspaper photographs, one of Mrs J Milbourne (nee Maud Beatty, a member of the Pollard Opera Company), and William Lygon, 7th Earl Beauchamp, governor of New South Wales 1899-1900.
