Description: Vigors' sketch ("No. 18"), is subtitled "a New Zealand girl". She is shown in a plain European dress, with a single ear-ring, short hair and facial tattoo (moko). Sketch is from Vigor's journal of his voyage on HMS Havannah and is mounted on a page following p 56. Lieutenant Philip Doyne Vigors was an officer with the 11th Regiment of Foot. Quantity: 1 page. Also includes a programme of the Waihirere Maori Club which includes a description of 'The taiaha and the testament' written by Leo Fowler, a pamphlet relating to the Maori publications by Reed, and an article about the Maori rock carvings in the Kaingaroa Forest. Description: Rodda describes his life including background from his birth and arrival in NZ in 1884, his life on his family's farm, near Rangiriri, now Te Kauwhata, the Maori in the district, including their use of flour sacks for clothing, mosquitoes, school days, his first employment on Waerenga Experimental Farm, his experiences with early, and later, grape and fruitgrowing. In March 1905 he began work on road and rail construction at Oio and he describes work conditions and the work in some detail, until he returned to Waerenga inAug 1905. He describes his various positions within the department, often as an inspector. He joined the Legion of Frontiersmen in 1913 and the Hamilton Company of the National Military Reserve in 1939. He describes duties as a justice of the peace, his experiences during the depression and his appointment as farm manager and college superintendent at Ruakura Farm of Instruction in 1932, and breeding of pedigree milking cattle. Description: Correspondence and papers on Maori Land Court disputes (often in Maori); politics and politicians; ornithology; Maori genealogies and ethnology. Papers of the Blue Spur and Gabriel's Gully Consolidated Gold Mining Company 1866-1899. W Leo Buller's correspondence re the gift of Buller's Maori collection to the nation, 1911-1914. Family papers, land deed certificates, clippings. The Maori letters arise mainly from Buller's law practice and deal mainly with land court work. Some of the earlier letters are probably to his father, James Buller. A H Turnbull and Elsdon Best both appear to have worked on the letters. Best did not apparently find them useful to his research, but they will be useful to anyone interested in land matters in the Manawatu and Horowhenua areas. Description: Vigors went to Australia with the 11th Regiment of Foot, in 1846. The diary records a voyage to Auckland, Whangaroa, New Hebrides, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji, with detailed descriptions of places and peoples visited. The manuscript includes illustrative work by Vigors in ink, pencil and watercolour, of land and geographical features, activities and artifacts of Maori life and culture, and of the culture of the various Pacific peoples he encountered and named portraits of persons encountered; annotated paper from New South Wales Parliament re the Botanic Gardens, Sydney; clippings; and letter in French. The `Havannah' was commanded by Captain Erskine A listing of the holdings of the Public Record Office of Ireland relating to Philip Vigors is located in the back file for this collection Source of title - Title page Relationship complexity - Glass plate negatives of illustrations within the volume are held in the Photographic Archve collection (PAColl-6719). These appear to have been taken for inclusion in the 1924 typescript transcript of the journal (qMS-2082-2084).
