Description: The schedule of owners of land in the Wainui-o-mata District include some of the earliest settlers in Wellington region; among the owners in 1854 were William Swainson, William Fitzherbert and Edward Jerningham Wakefield. The main task of the road board was to push on with the road down the valley to the sea at Orongorongo, and the progress made during the 11 years was not particularly speedy, one of the reasons being that the settlers were not satisfied with the provisions of the provincial Road Act which provided for local taxing for local improvements and vested the administration in local boards Accompanying material - Includes newspaper cutting from Dominion 1937 re the donation of the Minute Book Quantity: 1 volume(s). Description: Montage of portraits of the members of the House of Representatives. At the top is a view of Government house and grounds, Auckland. Names of those in the photograph added to the Name Field. Almost identical as PAColl-D-0821 except for the portrait of one member which is different. James Macandrew's portrait has not been included. Similar but not identical portraits on the montage at 1/1-003163-G, PAColl-6780, PAColl-0028. Edward Jollie previously identified as Francis Jollie, but Francis Jollie was not elected until 1861. Description: Three panoramic views of Wellington, between 1842 and 1845. The top view stretches across Thorndon Flat with Dr Evans' house on the left, a range of early houses and businesses along the waterfront and on the right, Colonel William Wakefield's house with flagpole. The centre view looks down over Te Aro Flat towards Mt Victoria. The lowest view is a completely circular one looking down onto Wellington Harbour and Evans Bay from the top of Mount Victoria. Description: Shows dwelling with what appears to be battened-down thatch roofing. There is a stream on the left, and the house stands in a cleared area of bush. The station was established by Clifford and Weld. First sheep station in New Zealand, established in Wairarapa by Mr C Clifford in 1843. Compare an almost identical copy (but on brown paper) in Mein Smith's hand from the collection of William Swainson, located at A-024-019. Description: View taken from the terrace in the garden of Dr George Samuel Evans, whose residence is shown in the left foreground. The first house below this on the hill at left, is that of Mr Mocatta. Beyond that house, rather indistinctly, are the New Zealand Company's Survey Offices, Stores, and the Emigration Houses; Messrs Clifford and Vavasour's Establishment, &c., &c. The Hutt Valley is in the distance, with the Hutt Road shown at the left of the harbour. In the centre, the large group of buildings comprises the Supreme Courts, Major Richmond's and the Government Offices; the Thistle Inn, Major Hornbrook's Stores, &c., and a little further to the right, the back of Barrett's may be seen by the side of the harbour. Further along is Mr Fox's house (under a vessel sailing into Lambton Harbour; Colonel Wakefield's residence, with the flagstaff, is a little further to the right, on rising ground, and at a greater distance. Passing on, the eye ranges down the beach to the house at Kuma Toto; Windy Point a little beyond, and Te Aro Flat in the distance. The large roof seen just to the right of Colonel Wakefield's flag-staff, is the Church of England, and the foreground on this side is finished by the residence and grounds of Mr Chetham Strode, which joins Dr Evans' premises. Description: Two European explorers walking up a hill in the foreground towards three other men who are gazing at the lake beyond them and the distant hills in the background. Fox explored the Wairarapa in May 1843 with Clifford, Vavasour and Whitehead with a view to initial surveying and establishing farming in the area. Exhibited in 'Picturing Paradise; the colonial watercolours of William Fox', Exhibition at National Library Gallery 25 February - 18 June 2000; Hocken Library, Dunedin, 11 September - 15 October 2000. Curated by Jill Trevelyan. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - title (with the lake's name misspellt) in ink in the artist's hand; Verso - second part of title and date. Description: The Ruamahanga River to the left, and Clifford and Weld's sheep station homestead in front of bush in the centre and right. The roof appears to be made of battened-down thatch, and the plants in front may be rows of vegetables. A slab chimney is on the left end of the single-storey house. Prior to January 2000, catalogued as Cottage by William Swainson; however comparison with an almost identical signed and titled pencil drawing at A-035-001 shows it to be of Wharekaka and by William Mein Smith. Description: Album compiled in the late 1850s and early 1860s by James Coutts Crawford (1817-1889). The photographs fall into distinct groups, interspersed through the album, as follows: Portraits of the Dundas and Moreton families, and scenes in Anverara, Dalmally, Overton and other localities in Scotland, as well as views of Barton Court, Tortworth Court (Gloucestershire) and Kintbury (Berkshire) in England. These photographs were probably taken during Crawford's residence in England during the 1850s. Photographs of the Crawford, Clifford, Weld and Levin families in Wellington, and views around Molesworth, Mulgrave and Hobson Streets, taken in the late 1850s and early 1860s. The photographer is unknown, but possibly Crawford himself. Views of Wellington from the Terrace, taken in 1858 by the Reverend Arthur Stock (1823-1901). Views of Ngauranga Gorge taken on 22 March 1859 by Matthew Fortescue Moresby, paymaster of HMS Iris. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
