Brighton, Outfitters, New Zealand Insurance Company offices, P.A. Philips, Ironmonger, T. Delattre, Homeopathic Pharmaceutist. Several men stand beside a variety of horse drawn carriages and handsome cabs which are parked along Queen Street. Taken by unknown photographer circa 1865 - 1866. Description: A view looking north from the south side of the mouth of the Hokitika River, known as South Spit. In the foreground on the sand can be seen a number of broken tree stumps; in the distance, across the river mouth, is the township, with a flagstaff at the town's edge. Description: Shows the stamper battery established on the Golden Crown claim in Thames, about 1868. Features a single-storey building with a tall chimney. Other smaller buildings, likely to be miners' dwellings, and roadways are established on the hills behind. A flagpole bearing two flags stands to the right side of the painting. The scene is dotted with figures, all male Gold was first discovered in Thames in 1867.
