Ring album 1

Description: Photographs taken circa 1880s by James Ring, photographer based in Greymouth. Scenes in Greymouth and nearby include views of severe flooding (p 3-5, 7); loading ships at the wharf showing hydraulic cranes raising hoppers of coal, and rolling stock laden with coal for transportation. Three shipping photographs including the SS Gerda wrecked on the Greymouth Breakwater in June 1888; the SS Mawhera ashore on North Beach, Greymouth in 1886, and the SS Rosamond crossing the Greymouth Bar. Beyond Greymouth views include the Grey River, Rocky Island, Brunnerton and the Brunnerton Bridge, and the West Coast Road. Then views of Lake Brunner, Refuge Island and Mitchell Falls. The Teremakau [now Taramakau] River is next, one view showing the road bridge, and one showing the flying fox (wire bridge) leading over to the Teremakau Hotel. These are followed by scenes along the Otira Gorge, including Warnock's Nob, Westley's Creek (Wesley Creek), and Starvation Point, before reaching Porter's Pass, Broken River, Arthur's Pass and the Devil's Punch Bowl Falls. The last sequence show Grasmere Station, Castle Hill Station (with one view of snow gates) and Craigieburn Station; the town of Cass; Bealey, Bealey Hotel, and Bealey Gorge, Lake Pearson and Lake Mapourika. Iorns album

Description: A pocket inside the front cover of this album contains 23 loose photographs of landscapes in New Zealand, many of them Government Publicity Photos. In the South Island various views show Milford and the Milford Track, Tasman Glacier, Mount Cook, and the Buller Gorge. In the North Island there are several views of a group of fallow deer near Featherston; two of geysers at Whakarewarewa; and two of caves in the Waitomo Cave system, showing the underground river in the Aranui Cave, and stalactites in the Ruakuri cave. The main body of the album contains older photographs, circa 1890s, of townscapes in the Wairarapa. Two scenes show groups of Maori performers, one of a posed group of men and women, some holding taiaha and mere; the other of a group of young girls dancing on a podium. Description: Album of scenic photographs taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department. The first part of the album concentrates on various sanatoriums, therapeutic baths and hot pools The second half of the album shows scenery in Northland, including Whangarei and the waterfalls at Whangarei; limestone rock formations at Waro; Russell and the Bay of Islands; and four views of the Waitomo Caves near Otorohanga. Mundy album 2

Description: Photographs taken by Daniel Mundy in the 1860s. All but one were taken in the South Island. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p 51). The North Island view was taken in Napier, and shows a two-storeyed house with quoinings, a horse-drawn coach outside, and to the right there is a wooden church. South Island views include many landscapes; hotels; the Christchurch government buildings, the Victoria Bridge, High Street and Cashel Street; and three sheep stations. Two are well-known, Benmore Station and Gramere Station (then known as Hawden's Station [i.e. Hawdon's Station]. The third is possibly that of George Gilbert Suman [the hand-written description appears to be `Sumans Station' at German Bay, and according to Wise's Post Office Directory, William Gilbert Suman lived in German Bay in 1875).
