New Zealand scenery album 2

Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenery taken by various photographs of whom Wheeler & Son and the Burton Brothers are identified. There are a number of images of Mount Tarawera and surrounds both before and after the eruption on 10th June 1886. A few other images show the volcanic areas around Whakarewarewa and Wairakei in the North Island; all the rest are in the South Island. Two interesting images show people transported across wide rivers by flying fox, one with a woman sitting in the `cage', across a river near Lake Wakatipu (probably Deep Creek or the Shotover, near Skippers), and one with two people crossing the Hooker River. Most of the views of people are distant views, but several near the end of the album show close-up views of men climbing on glaciers with ropes and ice picks. Description: 15 images including: three of young men practising life saving skills in the sea with a rope on a winch; two of girl guides helping at a kindergarten; two of East Street, Ashburton showing the different businesses parked cars and trees opposite; a car broken down in the middle of a ford; flooding on the road to the Harihari Hotel, with cattle being driven along it; a timber camp of five tents in the bush; a house at Kennedy's Bush on Banks Peninsula ca 1920; decorated boats on the Avon River with crowds on the banks watching and Ward & Co factory in the background; Cashel Street ca 1920 busy with trafic and pedestrians; and the Free Lance offices on The Terrace, Wellington. A play on words for Cashel Street, Christchurch and a reference to access to the gold rush on the West Coast. The cartoon appears on the opposite page to another titled 'Winter - Christchurch with NO road to the West Coast' set in 'Cashless street'and showing bankruptcies and other disasters for Christchurch. Mundy album 2

Description: Photographs taken by Daniel Mundy in the 1860s. All but one were taken in the South Island. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p 51). The North Island view was taken in Napier, and shows a two-storeyed house with quoinings, a horse-drawn coach outside, and to the right there is a wooden church. South Island views include many landscapes; hotels; the Christchurch government buildings, the Victoria Bridge, High Street and Cashel Street; and three sheep stations. Two are well-known, Benmore Station and Gramere Station (then known as Hawden's Station [i.e. Hawdon's Station]. The third is possibly that of George Gilbert Suman [the hand-written description appears to be `Sumans Station' at German Bay, and according to Wise's Post Office Directory, William Gilbert Suman lived in German Bay in 1875). The images also include photographs of transitional spaces and temporary art installations around the central city, including projects by GapFiller and Greening The Rubble, and the NZ Ice Fest, and art works by Sara Hughes, Chris Heaphy, Neil Dawson, Julia Morison, and Lonnie Hutchinson. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Valerie Love is a staff member at the Alexander Turnbull Library.
