Description: Woodridge sailed to New Zealand in Oct 1902 and in his journal describes his voyage on the ss `Papanui' visiting the Spain, Tenerife, the Cape of Good Hope and Tasmania en route, his travels through New Zealand, his departure and voyage back to England on the `Rimutaka' via Cape Horn, Uruguay. He writes of his daily activities, the people he met, the various sights, social life and customs of the places visited and he has included in the volume stamps from the various ports they visited, photographs, pen drawings, dried plants, maps and a huia feather. His itinerary is summarised at the end of the book which also includes a brief address list of persons met and rough abstract of expenses. Woodridge visited Wellington, Napier, Rotorua, Auckland, Helensville, Dargaville, Kaihu, Mangawhare, Maropui, New Plymouth, Wanganui, Pipiriki, Palmerston North, Pohangina, Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown, Paradise, Skippers, Wanaka, Alexandra, Lawrence, Christchurch, Springfield, Otira, Reefton, Nelson and Picton A telegram and two greetings cards were also with the journal Source of title - Supplied Quantity: 1 volume(s) (111 pages). 1 folder(s). 0.03 Linear Metres. Description: Log book kept by Barnes while he was serving aboard HMS Minotaur, HMS Pearl and HMS Sappho. During the first voyage HMS Minotaur travelled from Portsmouth to Lisbon, Madeira and Gibraltar. During the second voyage HMS Pearl and HMS Sappho travelled from Portsmouth to Lisbon, Cape of Good Hope, Perth, New Zealand, Samoa, Fiji, Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania, Adelaide and New Hebrides. During the second voyage Barnes was aboard HMS Sappho for most of the month of August 1875. The log book contains nautical entries, facts, maps and watercolours relating to the voyages. After the October 3rd 1874 entry, there is a longer commentary on the recovery of the ship McGregor off the coast of Fiji. The Terrible Tramp or How I Did Six Months with the additional chance of being drowned

Description: Lingard-Monk's engaging account of his round the world voyage aboard the British steamship `S.S. Buteshire'. Written in a jocular manner the narrative details shipboard activities, the daily life onboard, weather patterns and the progress of the vessel in minute detail. Volume is arranged into seven chapters and also includes reflections on the journey, quotes, proverbs and a daily log of places visited with latitude and longitude figures. Journey leaves Albert Dock, London on 31 January 1897, returning 3rd August 1897. The `Buteshire' was one of the largest cargo ships of its day and Lingard-Monk was one of the few passengers on the voyage. Recounts the adventures of the ship's cat, the Captain, fellow passengers and crew throughout the journal. Comments on the Cape of Good Hope as the first significant milestone of the voyage. Arrived at Port Adelaide, Australia on 24th March. `Buteshire' continued on to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Townsville and back to Sydney. Steamed across to New Zealand entering Foveaux Strait on 23rd May and visited Bluff where the author tastes Bluff oysters, at two pence a dozen. Many pages are devoted to humorous verse and instruction: "Instructions to passengers when conversing with Officers of the U.S.S. Co vessels" and "A valedictory address to the Union Shipping Company of New Zealand by a long suffering passenger". Both items appear to be written after the Captain advises Lingard-Monk that the ship is not to visit Wellington as planned. Further stop in Christchurch before the `Buteshire' begins her homeward leg via Cape Horn, stopping at the Canary Islands to collect mail, then onwards to Gravesend, arriving 3rd August. Lingard-Monk finishes by noting that the vessel broke down 22 times between Lyttelton and London.
