Description: Album of publicity photographs, and photographs of posters and advertisements taken by unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. Many of the images in this album were taken for a series of articles written by Oliver Neal Gillespie between January 1939 and June 1940, published in the New Zealand Railways Magazine. The series was entitled "Buy New Zealand goods and build New Zealand. New Zealand Industries Series". These contribute the largest group of images in the album, covering a wide range of industries. They include men's and women's clothing manufacturers; electrical engineering companies such as Pallo Engineering (petrol pumps), National Engineering (Neeco electric ovens), Standard Engineering Company; tobacco factories; potteries; Nugget shoe polish factory; brushware factories; and companies associated with the manufacture of food products (eg Watties canneries, Edmonds Baking Powder, Griffins and Bycrofts biscuit makers, and Whittome & Stevenson sauce and pickle makers. There are other sequences of images, including newly built state housing in Lower Hutt, with some houses still under construction beside the Hutt River, a streetscape, and a children's playground (p 7-8); a large crowd joining in a send-off of R.S.A. men to Australia in April 1938; a train laden with boxes of oranges from Rarotonga, the "Special orange train from Auckland"; and photographs of charts showing the progress of the New Zealand Government Railways, with railways workshops staff organisation charts (for Otahuhu, Addington, Hutt & Hillside Workshops (p 28-29). On p 35 there are views of a new hangar at Rongotai Aerodrome, under construction, then views of the completed exterior and the interior with a row of Blackburn B-5 Baffin bi-planes. Several images show collection of Railway sports trophies (including cups for their cricket teams), and two views of New Zealand Railways staff member Neil Edwards, a tennis champion who represented New Zealand in Britain in 1939. Description: Photographs of construction projects undertaken by Hansford & Mills Construction Company. The most important section consists of views of Parliament Buildings in Wellington, with a large number of images, both exterior and interior. Much of the detail relates to the marble columns and veneer, the marble sourced from the Kairuru Quarry in the Takaka Hills. Interior views show details of various areas, including the Legislative Council Chamber, the House of Representatives, the Maori Committee Room, the lobby for the members' lounge, and marble decoration in the main vestibule, the first floor, and the staircase. There are a number of images of the Kairuru Quarry, showing methods of quarrying the marble, transportation of the marble to Wellington, and machinery used for cutting and shaping the stone once it had arrived in Wellington. One scene also shows the incline at the old quarry at Sandy Bay. Other buildings, all only exterior views, or views of steel construction in early stages, include the State Fire Insurance Building (Featherston Street), Magnus Motors (Wakefield Street), the steelyard in Cable Street, the Ford Building (for Colonial Motor Company), and the Wellington Gas Company buildings, all in Wellington. Also two views of the Christchurch branch of the Wellington Woollen Company. Description: In part this album revolves around a family (of William Russell Morris) whose centre is the house at 9 Roscoe Terrace, Wadestown. It also revolves around one of the women in that household, Dorothy, who probably compiled the album. There are a number of women family members of different ages with whom (it would seem) she was close. There are also her colleagues at the Wellington Free Kindergarten, Taranaki Street, and the Newtown Kindergarten where she taught during the 1920s. A large part of this album is taken up with images of children, and by the end of the 1930s it looks as though Dorothy was an infant teacher at Marsden Collegiate School, Karori, Wellington, group photographs of pupils taken between 1933 and 1948. Holidays, and group outings sometimes involving picnics make up another large group of images. The only holiday outside New Zealand is to Fiji in 1920, and most of the images taken during this trip are of Indians and Indian events This is very much a woman's compilation. Men as a generalisation are few and far between and somewhat in the background when they appear. Thus it is also a good source of information on the clothing of women and children between 1920 and 1948 An envelope with four loose prints is inserted at the front of the album. Page 49 contains a newspaper cutting, showing a view of the tram stop at Moorhouse Street, Wadestown, with tram tracks and a tram, with bare fields on either side. Other - The school photograph at top left hand corner of page 39, is reproduced in the book "Marsden School" by Tosti Murray (1967), illustration no. 45. It identifies the class, the year, and all the pupils in the image. Other - The name C H Morris is taken from the Photo Archive Albums index, which says C H Morris was the photographer of three albums, and that he was a postmaster-general in the 1920s. There is no C H Morris listed in Wise's Post Office Directory, however William Russell Morris is listed as Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department; and listed as living at 9 Roscoe Terrace.
