View of Rotorua from above the Government Gardens

Date: 10 April 1958

From: Whites Aviation Ltd: Photographs

Reference: WA-45602-F

Description: Aerial photograph of view over Rotorua from above the Government Gardens. In the foreground are the abandoned foundations of a hospital. Beyond these is the nursery and rose garden attached to the Government Gardens and the Bath House. The race course can be seen in the distance to the right, and the city buildings spread out towards low hills in the background. Photographed by Whites Aviation 10 April 1958. The hospital foundations in the foreground resulted from a plan in 1929 for a new hospital to replace the King George V Hospital and the Sanatorium. These plans were put on hold during the depression, and work did not start until December 1938. The Second World War put an end to all building activity, and the project was never completed (Information from Clarrie Hall, Rotorua District Council, November 2009). Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s). Physical Description: Film negative, 13.8 x 12.6 cm
