Description: Two sailing ships (the Anna Watson and the Platina) in Auckland Harbour and a small boat with five people in the foreground. Planks of building timber, another rowboat on the foreshore and groups of tents on the higher ground to the left and on the skyline above cliffs. A red flag (the Red Ensign?) flying on a point at the top of the cliffs. The tent closest to the shore belonged to Captain Rough. Johnson did 2 drawings of this scene. The original of the other similar drawing has disappeared, but a copy made by Elizabeth Hocken is in the Hocken Library. It shows the flag being raised, cheered on by a group of onlookers. Description: The Rev Charles Nelson proposing on one knee to Sophia Coates on the top of Mount Victoria, Auckland, on a windy day, with a flagpole with signal flags behind the couple. On the left, other men and women are struggling up the hill against the wind. The sketch is drawn to illustrate a letter written by the artist's wife Kate to her sister Anna. Sophy Coates is much taller than Mr Nelson. Her parasol is blown inside-out by the wind. The sketch forms part of the letter, which is on a single sheet, with writing on both sides and the sketch in the final section. Attribution based on reference in extended title to Charles Heaphy's presence at the picnic in question; style of drawing; handwriting of title below image. Date of 1874 or 1875 based on the fact that Charles Moseley Nelson and Georgiana Sophia Coates married in 1875 Location: Initially assumed by the Library to show Wellington's Mount Victoria, with signal station. However the couple becoming engaged were based in Auckland, where the artist also lived until the late 1870s. In addition, the Auckland Freemasons had an annual picnic on Mount Victoria, Auckland. Extended Title - He you know is very small, she is a "fine girl". Mr Heaphy will talk about a little boy sparrow and laugh, but she is much larger than he is. Sophy Coates and Mr Nelson, that is how it came about. Mr Heaphy was at the picnic so must know. Inscriptions: Recto - Title in Charles Heaphy's hand below image. Description: View from above Grafton Gully, covered in dense bush, with low fenced hills and Governor Hobson's grave in the cemetery in the centre. A road runs past the cemetery towards Government House in the middle distance. Several other houses can also be seen. In the distance across the water, the flagstaff marks Mount Victoria, with Rangitoto beyond that. The flat island further off, left of centre is Tiritiri. Painted in early 1843, before the artist moved to an appointment at Russell. A fence has been raised around Governor Hobson's grave. The funeral had taken place in November 1842. Compare Mitford's very similar view at E-216-f-041. The view is attributed to Edward Ashworth by Janet Paul in Mrs Hobson's album (Auckland, 1990) p. 149. However there are strong stylistic similarities to the work of Mitford, and it seems more likely that he painted two views from similar spots for Mrs Hobson Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). A lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, (with title The New-Zealand festival), which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. J. Merrett in the Hocken Library, Dunedin. Words below the image read: The Maori feast depicted in this picture was one of then largest ever held in New Zealand. It was given by the Waikato chiefs. The site chosen was in the vicinity of Mt Hobson, at Remuera, near Auckland. About four thousand natives were present. A shed 400 yards long had been erected and was covered with blankets; and tents decorated with little flags, dotted the ground. The provisions comprised 11,000 baskets of potatoes, 9,000 sharks, 100 pigs, and large quantities of tea, tobacco, and sugar. A thousand blankets had been provided as presents. Governor Fitzroy, with his suite, visited the meeting on the 11th May 1844, when 1,600 natives, armed with guns and tomahawks, danced the wardance. The assembling of so large a force near the infant capital caused some uneasiness among the settlers, but admirable order was maintained throughout. The various tribes were accompanied by their missionaries, and religious services were well attended. The feast lasted about a week. Description: Shows a view looking down to the wharf at Official Bay, with house (probably Governor Wynyard's) in the left foreground. Beside the house is a flagpole flying the Union Jack, and a cannon pointing towards the harbour. On a lower level in the centre are a group of residences near the shore. Several sailboats are sailing in the harbour, with North Head and Rangitoto Island in the distance. The view is very similar to that in a lithograph view by Cuthbert Clarke, reproduced in Una Platts' "Lively capital; Auckland 1840-1865" (Christchurch, 1971), page 157. This lithograph is held at the British Museum (now British Library). Description: Captain Nagle's house on the right, in the middle distance, with other buildings to the left and huts and tents in the foreground. A flag on a hill in the middle distance, a small canoe landing on the shore to the right and a longer Maori war canoe in the water. Compare A-090-018. This view (A-090-017) shows the house in more detail, but lacks the large ship being built as shown in A-090-018. The similarity of the two views appears to be the reason that Chief Librarian Johannes Andersen attributed the work to Bambridge. However the style is not that of Bambridge The drawing is on a page that has been removed from a bound volume, with rust marks down the remains of the gutter. Other Titles - Bambridge, William Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - title in pencil in Bambridge's hand. In addition there are pencil inscriptions above and below the image in the hand of the Alexander Turnbull Library's Chief Librarian, Johannes Andersen, suggesting the work is by William Bambridge, providing extra information about Nagle, the date of Bambridge's visit and the name of the donor of the work to the Library. Description: Auckland City from Mechanics Bay (now Stanley Street). The houses on the cliff in the middle distance mark the southern end of Official Bay. A flag flies on Point Britomart and on the higher ground to the left are St Paul's, the Barracks and the business enterprises at the top of Shortland Crescent. Government House lies in the sheltered hollow on the left. The complete spire on St Paul's suggests the painting was done after March 1844, the date of completion of the spire.
