Photographs of family, buildings, and sculpture

Date: [1960s]

From: Beard, James Albert, 1924- :Architectural and town planning photographs

Reference: PA12-8865

Description: Includes - Family photographs. Church of Our Lady of Lourdes Havelock North, school buildings Napier, and the Parazyn House - all by architect John Scott. Wellington buildings including a block of flats, and a modern house in a state house suburb, probably by James Beard. Symbolic figure sculptures from the General Post office building, Wellington. Sculptures - At the time that this photograph was taken, these sculptures were stored at the Ministry of Works Depot at Gracefield. They were originally commissioned for the General Post Office building that faced Featherston Street, Wellington, and which was completed in 1912. The two seated figures flanking a globe were commissioned from a leading British sculptor of the time, Alfred Drury (creator of the statue of Queen Victoria in Kent and Cambridge Terraces). The two standing figures were supplied by an Italian firm. The figures were grouped above the main entrance to the post office, but were removed in 1942 as an earthquake risk (information from the curator of the Post Office Museum, 1986). No other use could be found for them, so they were stored at Gracefield, slowly becoming vandalised. From anacdotal information supplied by Rodney Cook (ex Ministry of Works Architect), these sculptures ended up in the Horokiwi tip in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Quantity: 24 colour original transparency/ies.
