Description: Maori artifacts from the Horowhenua district, in the possession of Mr & Mrs R J Law, of Shannon. All except numbers 2,3,4 & 5 are from the vicinity of Waikiekie and Roha-a-te-kawau island-pa. No 1: Model canoe; length 3 ft 4.5 inches; note holes along gunwale for lashing on topsides (rauawa). No 2: Kaheru with 3 pairs of holes for repairing break; lenth 15 inches; from Mangaroa Nos 3 & 4: Kaheru (scoops - broken) from Mangaroa No 5: Comb No 6: Wooden implement of unknown use; length 19.375 inches Nos 7 & 8: Pumice bowls - cinder carriers; diamters 3.875 & 2.5 inches x 3 inches; groove across under-surface for carrying-cord No 9: Wooden bowl for same use - a tawa knot or nodule; diameter 2.125 x 2.375 inches; depth of hollow, 1 inch. No 10: Pumice float for fishing net - circular disc with hole; diameter 2.75 inches No 11: Wooden wedge, obviously cut to taper with stone adze; length 4.75 inches No 12: Stone wedge or adze (?); length 5.563 inches No 13: Wooden teka (footrest for ko); size 4.25 x 6 inches No 14: Unique object of unknown use; length 14.75 inches No 15: Wooden pin; flattened cross-section; length 11.875 inches No 16: Barbed spear-point with 5 alternate barbs; length of fragment 13 inches (Source of information: original album caption). The Colonial and Vienna Exhibition was held to select New Zealand items for exhibition in Vienna. The display behind the group consists of items from the Colonial Museum (the poupou in the centre is from Te Hau ki Turanga, the meeting house still held at Te Papa), and the collections of Dr Alfred Barker and Sir Donald McLean.
