Description: Photograph album relating to Henry Beresford Maunsell's service during World War I, with the NZ Army 9th (Wellington East Coast) Mounted Rifles Regiment in Egypt. Many of the military personnel are identified, a few with later dates added noting when some of the men photographed in the album were killed in action. The first part of the album shows soldiers leaving on board HMNZ troopship 'Orari' 14 October 1914, the trip through Hobart, Colombo, Aden, Port Said until disembarkation in Alexandria December 1914. Many scenes show the shipboard stabling for horses used by Mounted Rifle troops; others show various ships they passed on the way. The latter part shows various military scenes in Egypt, including The New Zealand Corps camp near Cairo; swimming horses crossing the Nile; Red Cross Vauxhall ambulance; groups of soldiers riding camels; horse lines; and a line of horses at drinking troughs. Description: Photographs relating to the life of Bryan Scoullar, taken ca 1917-2010, particularly his service in the army during World War II. Bryan Scoullar collected all the images and took some of them. Images are arranged in a loose chronological order, and contain: Family photographs, circa 1917-1941, showing his mother Genevieve (nee Pope), his father Arthur, and his brother Patrick. Snapshots of the family are taken at the family residence in Wellington and during outings and holidays in New Zealand. Includes images of Patrick during the war, at home on leave, and overseas. Two school photographs taken at Marist Brothers' School, Wellington, probably of Patrick or Bryan. Photographs related to Bryan Scoullar's military service in North Africa during World War II. These are taken and collected in Egypt, Syria, and the Western Desert, ca 1941-1942. There are also some images taken during his training at Trentham army camp ca 1940, and documenting journey on board ship 'Nieue Amsterdam'. Contains images of patients, staff and activities at No. 3 General Hospital, Egypt, where he worked as an orderly. Includes tourist photographs taken and collected during travels in Egypt, and a trip with 5th field ambulance unit to Jerusalem and Syria. Also a group of Images taken at the Bulldog Club, Helmieh. Named figures include 'Dan' from South Africa, and Bob Bates ['Lulu la Blaze'?], and a Spanish Capuchin friar [Padre?] Sabino. Photographs of friends and family ca 1945-2010, including items related to his involvement with the Lamb of God covenant community in Wellington. Also images of Bryan's parents in older age, two mounted portraits of Bryan's god-daughter Anne Renai, and a few photographs documenting Bryan's trips overseas with an Australian Catholic group. Events include: celebrations to mark Bryan's 81st and 93rd birthday, a Christmas party in 1988, St Patrick's College Centenary 1985, a dinner at Bunratty Castle, [a restaurant in Australia?], and Anzac Day commemorations at Huntleigh Rest Home, Karori, ca 1990s. Places include: St Mary's Convent, Wellington, and St Thomas More Catholic Church, Wilton and [The Rigi?] St Vincent de Paul's. Description: Album of photographs taken aboard Maunganui on following voyages: Port Chalmers to Liverpool, England. Left Port Chalmers 5 February 1919, called at Colombo (24 February 1919), Bombay (27 February - 9 March 1919), Karachi (11 March 1919), Suez and Suez Canal (20 March 1919), Port Said (21 March - 10 April 1919), Alexandria (11-15 April 1919), Gibraltar (21 April919), Southampton (25-26 April 1919), arrived Liverpool 28 April 1919. She carried 98 passengers from Bombay to Port Said; 1800 officers and men from Karachi to Port Said; 750 British soldiers and 60 passengers from Alexandria to Southampton; and 11 passengers and 7 ambulance cases from Gibraltar to Southampton. Liverpool, England, to Port Chalmers, with 1124 New Zealand soldiers. Description: Album of photographs compiled by George Gordon Denniston illustrating a soldier's experience of of the Gallipoli campaign, April to September 1915. Photographer(s) unidentified. Album covers the period when Denniston left New Zealand in April 1915 for Egypt, and his time in a military camp there on the outskirts of Alexandria, from where, it seems, he left for Gallipoli. At the begining there are two photographs of the Samoan Expeditionary Force returning to New Zealand. The rest show soldiers preparing to leave and scenes on board ship which include stabled horses being fed en route, and dead ones being dropped overboard. Shipboard life and activities are well documented. There are many photos of fellow soldiers and some of the Asian crewmen. Ships and islands seen while passing through the Red Sea are depicted. Also some views of streets and people in Suez. Finally Alexandria and camp life. Over half the album is taken up with life and events at the military camp at Sidi Bishr which seems to have been situated near one of the suburban outskirts of Alexandria. This experience has been recorded in some detail, and includes social visits from women, views of French cavalry exercises, care and maintenance of the horses, native funerals and camp life in general.
