Description: Map of New Zealand that identifies major tribal groups and their localities as at 1800. Map has been annotated in pencil (hard top read most of the writing) to include more iwi groups, for example Te Kahui Manunga, Ngati Kuia in the South Island. Description: Shows geographical regions of the settlement of the descendants of the Maori canoes, as at 1820. The canoes shown include Tokomaru, Aotea, Takitimu, Matatua, Horouta, Tainui, Te Arawa, Horouta, Mamari and Kurahoupo. Also includes major iwi (tribes) and their relationship to the canoes. Author and purpose of map unknown, used for educational purposes. Probably traced (using felt tip pen), in ?1970-. The name W. Karaitiana is written on the back facing of the map. Description: Manuscript map, with Maori only text, depicting Lake Rotorua, and lakes Rotoiti, Rotoehu, and Rotoma; several Maori tracks in the region. It specifies land beonging to Ngati Pikiao, Ngati Awa, Ngati Rangiteaorere, Ngati Whakaue, Ngati Rangiwewehi and Nga i Terangi. Other land belongs to Tarawhai, Uenukukopako, Tapuika, Kawerau, Tuwhare and Tarawhai. Maori tracks are named Paritangi, Tikipuna, Tearataukanihi, Tekaharoa, Tetahuna. The map was drawn by a Maori representing the collective knowledge of the Ngati Pikiao hapu. For more detail, see 'Traditional cartography in the Pacific Basin' edited by David Woodward and G.
