Description: Family and other personal correspondence. Includes some of William Rolleston, his wife Mary, but mainly their son Francis Joseph; also including other family members. There are some letters of political, social and community significance relating to the careers of William Rolleston, and his son F J Rolleston. Writers include Professor J B Condliffe, Sir Francis Bell, Sir James Parr. Added in 1980 to this accession were 11 letters 1891-1893 from J D Ormond, Harold Kemp, E J Watts etc; 15 letters of family to F Rolleston at school, 1881-1889; various records of F Rolleston's life at school; his `Parodies on Gilbert and Sullivan' etc. Later in same year further Rolleston letters, 1868-1949 were added, including letters relating to the political career of John Christopher Rolleston. Includes journals and diaries kept by him, letters to his family back in England which describe his life in New Zealand, research material collected about Stephens' life including copies of his death notice, survey maps and pages from the `Nelson Examiner', transcripts of diaries and journals, and photographs of his grave. The journals have details of his voyage to New Zealand from England on the `Whitby' in 1841, of his daily life as a settler in Nelson, on the weather, agriculture and horticulture. Description: The diary records family affairs, buying and leasing of land, building the house, establishing the farm, day by day work, growing and harvesting of crops, stock raising, prices received for farm products and payment made for supplies. Brief noting of historical events such as the killing of settlers by Maori, attendance at militia parades. A son prospected for gold in the Kaitaki range. Inserted on loose sheet is a list of `Forts, blockhouses... occupied by the troops and militia 1863 and 1864'. Also included are a copy of the marriage certificate of William Harrison and Harriet Wells (1837) and photocopies of the end-papers of family books giving genealogical information; newspaper cutting concerning Mr P J McComish and Thomas Valentine's diary; obituary for Mrs R A Northwood (daughter of Thomas Harrison). Description: Journals describe Sarah Pratt's (Fowler) life in Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England, her trip to Nelson on board the `Indus', 1842-1843 and first few years in Riwaka and Nelson, [ca 1843-1846]. Journals have in depth description of childhood in Ramsbury, the voyage to Nelson, setting up a farm in Riwaka and life in Nelson helping her brother run a coastal trading business with comments on the Wairau Affray, meetings and trading with local Maori, accidents, crops, fellow white settlers, the New Zealand Company and the developing communities in Riwaka and Nelson. Some of the entries are written as if the events described had happened very recently but the donor thought that the journals had actually been written some years after the period covered. Description: The bulk of the collection comprises diaries, notebooks, correspondence and papers of James Coutts Crawford, 1817-1889 and correspondence with his sons H D, A D, C J, and J D Crawford who held a diplomatic post in China, and daughter Janet Willis. James Coutts Crawford's papers cover his naval career, sojourn in Australia, farming and development of land purchased at Miramar (Wellington) and service as Provincial Geologist. The papers reflect his interest in natural history, agriculture and mining. Early material was used in `Recollections of Travel in Australia and New Zealand' published in 1880. The papers of his sons deal with the development of the Miramar Estate and sheep farming. Arrangement: This collection is arranged so that the papers of James Coutts Crawford and each member of his family are self-contained as far as possible. The outward correspondence to members of the immediate family is collected under the writer while inward correspondence is confined to letters from extended family members and other writers. Description: Comprise correspondence, drafts of poems, reflections, reminiscences and stories of his life in Rumania before coming to New Zealand, and of his wartime experiences, research papers on plants and agriculture in Germany, copies of his certificates in agricultural engineering and plant research from Rumania and France, and newspaper clippings of his retirement in Hawkes Bay. His work as a plant pathologist and tree and forest management specialist with the DSIR and Forestry Institute is not covered in this collection. Source of title - Supplied Harry Jacks was born in Rumania and after gaining qualifications in plant research in France, came to New Zealand in the 1930's, where he worked with the DSIR and the Forestry Institute. During World War II he served with 2NZEF in Greece and on Crete, trained commandos and served on special operations in Yugoslavia and Greece. Retired to his farm at Havelock North in the 1970s.
