Description: Contains a facsimile copy of a hand written manuscript by Te Uremutu Hakaraia Kiharoa at the dictation of aged chiefs of the Ngati Raukawa, Otaki district. Contains numerous waiata later published by Sir George Grey in "Nga Moteatea me nga Hakirara o nga Maori" including waiata for Te Heuheu Mananui, Papaka Te Naeroa all of Ngati Tuwharetoa; Werawera of Ngati Toa; one waiata "whakawai moko"; numerous waiata whakaoriori tamaiti. One waiata [p.95] which contains referecnes to Tuhoe, Ngati Kahungunu and the Wairarapa, and mentions the mere pounamu "Heketua" which originally travelled through these tribes before being acquired by Te Rauparaha and Te Rangihaeata. Description: Collection comprises extracts taken from Krull's letters to his mother covering the period 15 January (just prior to arrival at Wellington on the `Equator') to 25 May 1859. They describe life in early Wellington, trips taken to the Wairarapa through the Hutt Valley and to Otaki, and Krull's impressions of the natives. Includes preface page written by Boll. Accompanying material - Accompanied by copy of article on Krull from Wanganui Historical Record, (November 1980), and copy of letter from donor re provenance of letters. Frederick Krull arrived in New Zealand in January 1859 on board the Swedish ship `Equator'. He established himself as a well-known merchant in Wellington, and was a member of the City Council and Harbour Board. Description: These letters were written by Octavius Hadfield to his brother, Charles, and sister, Amelia, during the period 1862 to 1872, mainly from Otaki. They contain information on family and church matters and comment on the current political situation in New Zealand, particularly being concerned with the wars and the actions of Grey, Gore Browne and Fox. Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - These letters were transcribed by Christopher Lethbridge from photocopies of the originals which are held at qMS-0899 and qMS-0900 (Vols 3 and 4) Octavius Hadfield was a missionary with the Church Mission Society and in 1839 was the first priest to be ordained in New Zealand. In November 1839 he began his work at Waikanae and Otaki which was to remain the base for much of his work establishing Maori missions. He held strong opinions on purchase of Maori land and the constitutional rights of Maori and gave much advice to Sir George Grey during his term of office. However these views led him into conflict with settlers and political leaders during the New Zealand Wars. In 1890 he was elected third Anglican primate of New Zealand. He died in Marton in 1904. He refers in particular to relationships between Maori and settlers and includes descriptions of Maori pa, legends, customs and the scenery, and a walk he made as a child in 1845 from Wellington to Waikawa, Otaki. Description: Survey map of Maori land blocks in the Otaki district, from the Waitohu Trig southwards to the Hinetua and Pahiku blocks, east to the Kaingaraki no. 1 & 3 and Kohatu a Humai blocks, and west to the Ferry Hotel. The major focus of the map is the identification of 42 named rural Maori land blocks in the vicinity of the township. Land within the township itself is depicted as sections. Dennan's peg is marked in the Urukaraka block. Two areas are labelled "surveyed by Swainson" and "surveyed by Hughes", and another area is marked "Crown grant to Matene". The main road, tracks, streams and the course of the Otaki riverbed (not named) are shown. Similar to map IRN 1148858, but slightly less detail. Scale probably 5 chains to the inch.
