Description: Album chiefly containing views of the North Island of New Zealand, many taken by professional photographers Wrigglesworth and Binns. Images include one of a cricket match between an English team and the Wellington team, March 23-24 1888, at the Basin Reserve, showing spectators in the foreground, the players on the field, and buildings on the hill behind. There are a number of views of the Whanganui River, including a cave, a canoe with 5 men poling through rapids, a view of the river from Hiruharama, and a waterfall. At the end of the album there are images of Port Said, Malabar, and two newspaper photographs, one of Mrs J Milbourne (nee Maud Beatty, a member of the Pollard Opera Company), and William Lygon, 7th Earl Beauchamp, governor of New South Wales 1899-1900. Description: View from the hills opposite Wanganui township, looking down on the river and town, with the Gun-boat Stockade (the site of Moutoa Gardens) closest, the Main Stockade (Rutland Stockade) and the middle stockade (York Stockade). Houses and possibly a hospital are also visible as is Christ Church and St John's Wood (to the far right), with the sea horizon on the left. The nature of the terrain is also indicated as sandhills, flax swamp, fern and grass. In the distance to the right "The Taua" (a Maori raiding party) is also shown. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: View from the south bank of the Whanganui River, with a Maori family beside a toitoi in the foreground and Shakespeare Cliff visible futher along the bank. Across the river is a clear view of the town, with Rutland stockade on the hilltop to the right, York Stockade on its hill to the left and Christ Church in the valley between the two, along with houses and streets. Christ Church appears to be on the wrong side of the adjacent road (possibly just a failure of perspective). The large central building at the water's edge is the Taylor & Watt store house and private wharf. The large building at the water's edge on the far left is the Commercial Hotel. The two jetties have a brig moored at them. Possibly the original for an illustration in a book (but not for Taylor's 'The past and present of New Zealand') Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - title.
