Text reads (in part): "Whilst SS "Tongariro was crossing L Taupo on Thursday Mar 15/06, a huge column of steam was seen ascending from Ruapehu Mt and it was thought by those on board that thermal activity was once more in vogue in the crater lake of the mountain - as a party organised by Mr Meers was onboard en route for the mountain, it was suspected that a trip full of interest was underway. Accompanying the party was Mr H P Norton of Auckland also Capn Ryan of the steamers. Mr A Warbrick was a passenger on departmental business to Tokaanu ... the base of the mountain was reached here the interest began for evidences of former gigantic volcanic activity was noticed everywhere, huge lava flows &c. A stiff climb was now encountered up the lava ridges to the right of the "Skate" Glacier and as we ascended magnificent panoramic views were unfolded at every turn. .. admiring the magnificent panorama and cloud effects were now advancing from the w[est] due to the great activity of Ngauruhoe pouring out volumes of steam & dust ... when we got on ridge overlooking lake, an indescribable scene met our gaze on all sides the pure snow and ice was covered with a dark grey cloak of mud and ash making a singular looking appearance ... on arriving on edge of lake a close investigation showed considerable change since last being there. The ice cliffs on S side of lake were smashed to pieces whilst on N side the ice had been completely cleared off the lava where formerly it was very deep. Cleared off no doubt by the amount of hot water which fell there ..." Other Titles - 15 March 1906 Extended Title - From his Ruapehu eruption sketchbook. 1902-1908, pages 44-46.
