Description: Extensive view of a plain with volcanic cones in the background, including Mount Hobson and Mount Eden, showing a feast given by Waikato Chiefs in 1844, attended by about 4000 Maori and many Pakeha. A 400 yard-long shed is in the background and Governor Fitzroy is shown visiting the scene with many other Pakeha on 11 May 1844. Features and incidents are numbered and described below the work. A haka is being performed on the right for Fitzroy, Sheppard (the colonial Treasurer) and William Swainson (the Attorney General). Tribal groups are named as Ngatihaua, Ngatikoroki, Ngatimahuta, Ngatiwhatua, Ngatikoura and Ngatiruru and the plain is covered with large numbers of people, the majority Maori. A lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. J. Merrett in the Hocken Library. This copy lacks a printed inscription on the recto of copy D-001-009 "Presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890" Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Album of tourist views of New Zealand and the sub-Antarctic Islands, chiefly taken by John Richard Morris, Jnr, circa 1890s. Places and subjects listed above where identified. The Sub-Antarctic Island views are all of native flora and fauna of the different islands, listed on the images as mollymawks, albatrosses, sea lions, crested penguins and erect-crested penguins On page 32 there is a view of the SS Knight Templar leaving Lyttelton on February 17, 1900, taking about 260 soldiers and 300 horses of the 3rd Contingent "the New Zealand Roughriders" to Durban, en route to fight in the South African War. Description: Mount Taranaki on the left in the distance. Two cottages in a clearing backed by tall trees in the middle ground, with fenced in gardens. In the foreground a field with sheep and cattle and hay being hauled on a cart by oxen. The artist is very likely to be Hannah Stephenson Smith who drew views of a later family home in Taranaki, and was also the sister of the author of the book in which this view appeared as the frontispiece.
