Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Description: Photographs relating to the Quartermain family, none of which have captions. None of the people or places are named. Of interest are a number of views of the ruins of a house, with only the chimneys standing; several of the new St John's Church, Hororata, including laying the foundations, building construction, and the completed church with lychgate; one of the tombstones of Sir John Hall, and his wife, with the new St John's Church partially visible in the background (for which Sir John Hall bequeathed the money); and one photograph of a steam tractor fording a river with difficulty, with a tow-rope leading to three laden wagons on the far side of the river. Description: Photographs of Clarke, Graham and Fyfe who first climbed Mount Cook on Christmas Day 1894, with their mountaineering equipment; the sheep dog of James MacKenzie the sheep-stealer; a bullock team pulling wool bales; the Fairlie to Mount Cook coach with John Rutherford driving; the bridge over the river at Lake Tekapo with the hotel next to it; Mount Cook Station, originally built by A Burnett, with a thatched roof and the family outside it; a drawing of the ferry crossing Lake Pukaki and the original accommodation house on the shore; hay-making in front of the Balmoral homestead; the yard of Haldon station surrounded by trees showing the out-buildings and men with dogs; Levels homestead with a man with a hoe and others outside; and a group of men and women picnicking in front of two tents at Governor's Bush in Mount Cook township being the first party conveyed by the Mount Cook Motor Company ca 1880s. Description: Album of photographs taken by mountaineer and photographer Arthur Sutton-Turner, all related to the Southern Alps and all with good captions. People climbing with Sutton-Turner include Jack Lippe and T A Fletcher. A number of images relate to their journey towards the mountains, stopping at two sheep stations, the Richmond Station at Lake Tekapo, and Lilybank Station. At Lilybank, Sutton-Turner took a number of photographs of sheep being mustered from the High Country ready for shearing, and finally trucks being loaded with wool bales for sale in Fairlie. Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea.
