Description: Shows a general view of the Maori settlement at Pipiriki, with two cloaked Maori figures seated on the ground in the left foreground, one smoking a pipe. The various buildings (huts, food storage, fences) are shown, with the river flowing through in the middle background. An edge of the church roof is labelled at the extreme right. Description: A half-length profile view of a Maori man smoking a pipe in a train carriage. He wears a wide-brimmed European hat, a long piece of greenstone in his left ear, and has a long scarf knotted around his neck. He sports moko on his chin. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, many taken by Robert Henry Bartlett. Several of these were taken in Nelson, one showing Fairfield House, and one interior view of a room (on page 50) with the pencilled caption "Fell - Nelson". Possibly in what is now named Warwick House which was built by Alfred Fell in 1854. However pages 19 to 31 contain photographs taken by Josiah Martin in the Rotomahana hot springs area including the village of Te Wairoa, and the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 Tarawera eruption. The album contains 53 pages of which 32 to 49 are empty. Pages 51 to 53 show scenes relating to Florence (Italy), one of the city, and two showing art works (one a relief carving in the Campanile di Giotto, "La logica"). Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Shows a view across the harbour towards the town buildings, with Plimmer's Ark noticeable on the foreshore, and the buildings of barracks on the more distant hill at the left. In the right foreground is a small jetty with a wooden hut or sentry box on the end of it, and wooden steps leading down to a moored rowing boat. In the left foreground a red canoe with a cargo possibly of fish or firewood is poled along by a seated tag-cloaked pipe-smoking figure, and a figure standing in a red cloak. The reflections of the canoe and the jetty and hut are clearly visible in the water in the foreground. Further away at the left are a yacht and a larger sailing ship seen end on. Attribution: Attributed to Gold on stylistic grounds, such as the reflections of the canoe and the awkwardness of the figures; see work by Gold at A-288-026. Another version of this watercolour, closely similar, is in Whanganui Museum, signed 'Dr Phillips pinxt'. The name Dr Phillips is not known as an artist resident in Wellington in the 1850s. One artist may have copied the other's work. William Edward Phillips registered as a medical practitioner in Nelson in 1867, but is not known to have been an artist Dating: Gold was based in Wellington between 1847 and 1858. 'Plimmer's Ark', the wrecked barque Inconstant, was moored at the junction of Lambton Quay and Willis Street from 1851 The sentry-box on the end of the wharf was located close to Government House, now the site of Parliament buildings, towards the north end of Lambton Quay Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Three coloured postcards, one of a old Maori woman dozing outside a house (identified as Ceylon Wickliffe's Great Aunt), a Maori girl described as the Arawa Belle (identified as Marie McFarland), and some Maori children playing in the lake at Ohinemutu; the seven men of the executive of the New Zealand Harbour Boards Conference seated outside a building; three photographs of a Maori event in a park, probably in Wellington, with tents pitched and participants wearing kakahu over European dress; two women in traditional dress next to a wood carving, one is holding a hoe; a hut at Hawk's Crag on the Buller River; a loaded cart passing through Porter's Pass; Wellington wharves seen from Oriental Parade; the Buller River; a group of men gathered round a table to sign a document; view from Mount Cook towards Mount Victoria with what are possibly brickworks in the foreground; and photographs of four petitions submitted in Greymouth. Provenance: Irene C Zachariah was the widow of Joseph Zachariah who operated the Zak studio in Wellington.
