Description: A small cottage perched on a bank, with trees behind and a view up Wellington Harbour towards the Hutt Valley. Shows one of the first European houses built in Wellington. Dr Henry Taylor arrived aboard the "Success" in Wellington with J. C. Crawford in December 1839. Tiakiwai was named for Tiakiwai Pa, a cluster of Maori houses at the northern end of Thorndon, close to the beach below modern Stowe Hill and the north end of Tinakori Road. Description: Shows a general view of the harbour from Tiakiwai. Other views of Wellington Harbour by Jane Stowe date from 1927 and the 1880s. This one seems more typical of those of the later date which use more Chinese white. The monogram JS (superimposed on each other) may have been used in both periods.
