Bolton Street Cemetery is in the immediate foreground. The Government Building, Parliament Buildings, Government House, Government Print building and Thorndon railway station are to the left. Several ships are berthed at the wharves and a ship is steaming towards Queens Wharf in the middle distance. Kelvin Chambers and Mayfair Chambers can be seen (both under construction). Description: A view along a beach (now Thorndon Quay) looking towards Kaiwharawhara and Wadestown, with the road to to Wadestown shown winding up the hill in the background. There are houses at the beachfront on the left, mostly at the top of the low hill above the beach. Major Baker's house appears as a roof only, with a tree in front of it. A couple on horseback is in the foreground and a Maori man, woman and child stand at the left. The Library holds a photographic copy of the privately-owned watercolour original for this engraving, painted between 1842 and 1845 (negative 138581 1/2). The watercolour has no Maori group on the left but is otherwise very similar to the engraving Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Physical Description: Hand-coloured engraving, 75 x 130 mm on sheet 380 x 280 mm.

Description: View from Tinakori Hill, looking down over Thorndon, showing the Immigration Barracks, the first St Paul's Church and a single house on the shore at Oriental Bay. The view looks across the harbour towards Mount Victoria and Evans Bay. There are several dead trees on Thorndon Flat. Point Jerningham is on the left across the water, and there are six ships and several smaller vessels in the harbour. Two flags are flying close to the shore The Hocken Library holds a lithograph (possibly a unique surviving copy) of this view, published by Jones & Bluett, Wellington, 1841. The view is taken at much the same time as Heaphy's 'Thorndon Flat, April 1841' (C-025-010) Features marked along the top, but trimmed, so that they are all incomplete: 'n Houses' is probably Immigration Houses'; 'a Esq.r' is probably Duppa Esquire [house in Oriental Bay]; 'Church' is probably St Paul's Church; 'ia' is the end of Mt Victoria; 'Bay' on the left, is Evans Bay. Dating: the associated lithograph was published in 1843. St Paul's Church, Museum Street, was consecrated in 1844, but possibly completed some time before 1844.
