Description: Extensive view of a plain with volcanic cones in the background, including Mount Hobson and Mount Eden, showing a feast given by Waikato Chiefs in 1844, attended by about 4000 Maori and many Pakeha. A 400 yard-long shed is in the background and Governor Fitzroy is shown visiting the scene with many other Pakeha on 11 May 1844. Features and incidents are numbered and described below the work. A haka is being performed on the right for Fitzroy, Sheppard (the colonial Treasurer) and William Swainson (the Attorney General). Tribal groups are named as Ngatihaua, Ngatikoroki, Ngatimahuta, Ngatiwhatua, Ngatikoura and Ngatiruru and the plain is covered with large numbers of people, the majority Maori. A lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. He was employed by Wilfred Woolf in Eketahuna in 1894, and subsequently bought his business, and entered the firm of Kibblewhite and Wilson. Ephemera items include postage stamps and stickers; Masterton Girls' Collegiate School certificate for Miss Black, 1895; Christmas cards; dance and garden party invitations; dinner menus; a toast list; riddles [from Christmas crackers?]; an advertisement for Gisborne City Hall recital of Len Barnes and Muriel Smith, 1927; and a postcard for United Treat Movement 1913-14 for State School Children of Poverty Bay District organised by Mr and Mrs George Smith. Description: Reverend J Oscar Michelsen's photograph album relating to his time as a missionary in the New Hebrides (Vanuatu), circa 1878 to 1890s. Also some photographs relating to the Sprague family of Dunedin, New Zealand, taken circa 1900s-1920s. Photographer unidentified. Michelsen has written a short caption under each image. - Vanuatu images are mainly taken on the island of Tongoa. Other locations include the islands of Nguna, Efate, Epi, Emae, Erromanga, Aneityum, and Aniwa. Buildings featured include mission houses, churches and some private residences (both European and indigenous). There are also some images of boats, road building, a banyan tree and other flora, scenic landscapes (mainly beaches and harbours), men in traditional dress, traditional drumming, and a scene from a meeting regarding the purchase of land for Tongoan mission station. Single print of collaged images relating to Michelsen's life is entitled "Autobiography in Photography" and includes portraits of Michelsen and a Bible & Tract Depot. Tribal groups are named as Ngatihaua, Ngatikoroki, Ngatimahuta, Ngatiwhatua, Ngatikoura and Ngatiruru and the plain is covered with large numbers of people, the majority Maori. A 1969 photomechanical reproduction, taken from a lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J.
