Description: Men sharpening shearers' blades on a grindstone at Grasmere Station, near Cass, Canterbury Region, photographed by John Dobree Pascoe in 1944. Alan Rose stands on the right. Caption - written by John Pascoe: "In the back country, that is in the mountainous or inaccessible parts of New Zealand shearing is still done by hand with 'the blade', though most North Island or low country stations use machines.
